This case raises a question bigger than one courtroom: where does mental illness end and personal accountability begin?
Postpartum psychosis is real and serious. But if biology becomes a blanket explanation for criminal responsibility, we also have to confront the precedent that creates for women everywhere. Women serve in combat, lead corporations, command organizations, hold public office, sit on juries, and make decisions that affect millions.
We cannot demand that women be regarded as fully capable, responsible adults in every arena while casually suggesting that female biology itself makes women less accountable for their actions.
Justice should consider genuine mental illness. But justice must also remain justice.
Equality and accountability have to stand together.
