A piece of exonumia with a historical Iowa vignette. This payment order from the Banking House of Green and Stone, features a steam engine from the Mississippi & Missouri Railroad (Iowa's first railroad). Green and Stone also functioned as a subscription office for the sale of M&M RR stock. The year this payment order was issued (1856) the M&M RR was big news after completing a line that connected Davenport and Muscatine to Iowa City. That same year a riverboat hit the M&M bridge over the Mississippi River and sued the rail road to remove the bridge. The railroad hired a young lawyer from Illinois to represent them. That Lawyer was Abraham Lincoln.
