Mendocino Land Trust is thrilled to introduce the two newest members of our Board of Trustees. Please welcome Joaquin Feliciano and Paul Ruiz-Lopez to the MLT team. Our new Trustees are well qualified to help MLT forward the mission of conservation, public access, and habitat restoration in Mendocino County, bringing with them great energy, hands-on field experience, and a passion for community partnerships.

Joaquin Feliciano moved to Mendocino County in 2022, but his first experience working here was in the late 90’s, when he spent several summers conducting field research on the Navarro River and its tributaries while earning his PhD in Ecology from UC Davis. He is a lifelong learner and dedicated supporter of social justice and conservation. He works remotely for the UC Davis Office of Compliance and Policy. Joaquin looks forward to contributing his time, energy, and experience to Mendocino Land Trust and its mission.

Paul Ruiz-Lopez is a horticulturist at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens, where he maintains various plant collections, leads educational tours, and combats invasive species. Originally from San Diego, Paul has lived in Northern California since 2014. He studied botany at Humboldt State University, and his background includes studying elephant seals and seabirds on the Farallon Islands, farming in Clearlake, and living off-grid in Willits. Paul has a passion for the unique beauty and culture of Northern California, and looks forward to fostering collaboration between MLT and local environmental partners.

Bay Area Friends! We will be in Oakland this Sunday, October 4th, and we’d love to meet you! California Coastal Cleanup Day is a wrap! The 42nd annual event saw 96 TONS of trash picked up state-wide, with 750 sites reporting and a whopping 50,000 volunteers working together to keep all that trash out of our ocean and waterways. We really are stronger together!
MLT staff and volunteers at Seaside Beach and Hare Creek Beach recovered 200 pounds of garbage, contributing to the 700 pounds of refuse collected along 14 sites on the Mendocino Coast. Sonoma-Mendocino Coast District State Parks and Mendocino Area Parks Association did an amazing job coordinating site captains and volunteers from Navarro State Beach up to Westport-Union Landing State Beach. Prizes were awarded for the weirdest items recovered, including a runner-up prize for MLT’s Hare Creek crew who found a nose pencil sharpener – use your imagination for this one.
Novelty items aside, garbage in our waterways is no joke. We are truly grateful for the California Coastal Commission and their decades of work documenting the collected trash and compiling that data to advocate for healthy waterways. This data helps to shape policies that keep our precious coast clean for wildlife (and humans!) on land and sea.

Special thanks to Fort Bragg High School's Interact Club!

The 42nd annual California Coastal Cleanup is happening this Saturday! MLT will be at Hare Creek Beach & Trail in Fort Bragg from 9 am until about 12 noon, removing and weighing trash, clearing the trail, and collecting data to support California Coastal Commission.
The data volunteers collect each year has helped track what plastic products are making their way to California's beaches, rivers, and creeks. With these numbers, policy makers, businesses, and the public can begin to take actions to reduce both plastic production and pollution. Every bit counts, and every single volunteer makes it happen! Bring gloves, we will have trash buckets, coffee, and snacks.

Join us this Saturday, September 12, at Old Smith Ranch for a morning outing with lifelong birder, MLT staffer, and Mendocino Coast Audubon Society Vice President, Matt Franks. We’ll meet at the Old Smith Ranch Preserve parking area at 9 am.
It’s the perfect season for bird watching – and MLT has the perfect place to scope out feathered friends of all sizes – from the hummingbirds and song birds along the trail, to the many shore birds on the estuary, scores of cliff swallows under the bridge, hawks, and maybe even an eagle or two.
Matt will offer binocular practice tips and help us spot and ID our feathered friends. We expect clear weather, so wear a hat! Bring water and binoculars if you have them. We will have a few extra pairs of binocs if you don’t.
This will be an accessible walk on a moderately graded paved trail with no stairs.
RSVP’s not required, but are appreciated! [email protected].
Old Smith Ranch Preserve is located at 28355 Shoreline Hwy (Hwy 1), north of Fort Bragg.

Both of our monthly volunteer days are on for next week:
Hare Creek Stewards will meet on Labor Day Monday, September 7. Why not offer a labor of love on Monday and pitch in for an hour or two before the parade? Or, just come on out and enjoy this beautiful, hidden gem of a beach in Fort Bragg.
If you are laboriously inclined, Lenny and the stewardship gang will be pruning away and pulling non-native invasives like ivy, scotch broom, wild radish, and our mortal enemy, Himalayan blackberry. Meet at the end of the Mendocino College parking lot and cross the field to the trail. Bring gloves, water, and a hat – we expect a clear day.
Navarro Point Stewards will meet on Wednesday, September 7, from 10-noon. Join our dedicated volunteers Chuck, Tom, and Tom, along with MLT’s Chase, and help us pull invasive thistles. We’ll see what repairs are needed along the trail, and generally keep the path clean and clear.
And mark your calendars for the Annual Coastal Cleanup Day at Hare Creek – coming up fast on Saturday, September 19. This is a super fun day that always brings out a fantastic group of folks who aren’t afraid to roll up their sleeves. We’ll have snacks and coffee!

Mendocino Land Trust has opened the applications for MLT’s Redwood Ecology Grant for Mendocino County schools serving grades 3-8.
MLT is committed to expanding the understanding and appreciation of our unique redwood forests. We truly believe that people will protect what they love, and that by learning about our magnificent redwood forests, students will be better equipped to be educated stewards of our forests in the future. We hope to foster a connection to the majesty and mystery of our redwoods by helping teachers and schools get our children out into the woods to experience it for themselves.
The Redwood Ecology Grants can provide partial funding for field trips to a redwood ecology-focused environmental education program administered in Mendocino County. Funds may be used for transportation, overnight accommodation, and instruction.
Qualifying field trips must be completed during the 2026-2027 school year, with an end-date of April 25, 2027. Application deadline is September 25, 2026.
Visit our Linktree for full details and application, or go directly to our website, News & Events, Community Programs, Youth Groups & Educational Opportunities.
