NHUDG IS A FINALIST!

NEWSLETTER, MARCH 24, 2013
Hello Friends of NHUDG,
We have a second opportunity to introduce the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial community to the potential of the Mill Site. Sustainable Silicon Valley, a solutions oriented nonprofit organization is in the " crowd sourcing" phase of its showcase contest. http://www.sustainablesv.org/ The deadline for this round of voting is the middle of April.

NHUDG is a finalist in the Sustainable Silicon Valley Showcase. Please go to the SSV website and express your support for the NHUDG vision. We need to show community support behind finding a new owner for the former Mill Site. Fort Bragg deserves a new owner who embraces the challenges and the opportunities here on the North Coast. This new owner will need to combine substantial financial and legal resources with a long range vision of regenerative design and a sustainable future. The climate crisis, resource depletion and reckless development have led us to the brink. Here in Mendocino we can model a resilient, sustainable alternative. Step into the future and support the Noyo Headlands Unified Design Group's sustainable proposal.

Please read our essay--and if you think our ideas have merit, please rate NHUDG and our concepts for the future of Fort Bragg. We would love it if you had time to leave a comment as well.

You will need to log-in to Eco-Cloud in order to vote and you will have to register to log-in. As soon as you've logged in, you can rate our submission and add a comment. The login insures that you can only rate our submission once. If you voted the last time we asked you to do so, the program will not allow you to do so again.

You can go directly to our page and register/log-in there (top right of page). Here is a direct link to our submission: http://sustainablesv.org/ecocloud/index.php/solutions/view/185 or you can look at all of the projects that were submitted. Here is that link: http://sustainablesv.org/ecocloud/index.php/solutions. The NHUDG submission is #66.

Friends of the North Coast.
The Coastal Commission is coming to the Coast. This is very rare and an important opportunity for our community.
Issues that I believe are relevant to all of us are the preservation of prime agricultural land, water issues, the opportunity for growing food out on the Mill Site, regional preparation for Climate Change and, I'm sure, many more. The meeting info:
SEPTEMBER 12-14, 2012
Caspar Community Center
15051 Caspar Road
Caspar, CA 95420
The agenda for the meeting will be posted on their website early next month.
California Coastal Commission Home Page
The best way to have an issue you may care to weigh in on considered, is to send in letters and or materials by mid August. This will allow the CC staff time to get them in to the board packets. These should be addressed to:

Bob Merrill, District Manager
California Coastal Commission
North Coast District Office
710 E Street, Suite 2000
Eureka, CA 95501
(Their CONTACT page seems to be about snail mail and phone. I found no e-mail.)

Letters should clearly state, at the outset, their purpose. i.e. "I am writing regarding the future reuse of the former Georgia Pacific Mill Site." There are a number of people preparing the packet for the commissioners. This will help them distribute the letters appropriately.

OK, I think I have it now. We have set up an organization page for NHUDG. We are entering an important new period in the planning for the future of the former mill site here in Fort Bragg. We will be posting articles, links, and critical up-coming meetings. Almost 10 years after the mill was shut down, Georgia-Pacific has come up with a plan for rezoning. It is too big and lacks important safeguards. Now is the time for our community to examine their proposal and submit comments. This first period, called "scoping' for the EIR (Environmental Impact Report)" ends March 5th. Please read the plans, get informed, and submit your comments. The NHUDG team.
