Observing Juneteenth in Wilson County –

On this day in 1865, General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston to announce the end of the Civil War and the enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas. As we reflect on June 19th, we recognize it as a pivotal date in Texas history—a day that marked the end of an era and the beginning of a complex new chapter for our state and our nation.

The Wilson County Historical Society encourages residents to take time today to consider the profound shifts that occurred in the American social and legal fabric following the conclusion of the War Between the States. This is a moment to acknowledge the men and women, both Black and White, who navigated the immense challenges, hardships, and rebuilding efforts of the Reconstruction period here in Texas.

History is the foundation of our identity. By understanding the full breadth of our past, we remain better equipped to build for the future.

🪦 Cemeteries hold a certain fascination for many people, as they are places where the living can honor and remember those who have passed away. These final resting places serve as reminders of our own mortality while also providing a connection to our ancestors and loved ones who have gone before us. By visiting cemeteries, we can pay our respects, reflect on the lives of those who came before us, and find solace in the knowledge that their memories live on through us.
