One of the reasons Route Step Outdoors exists is because we believe connection matters.

For some of us, sitting across from someone and talking about what we’re carrying isn’t easy. But put on a pack, hit a trail, sit around a fire, or spend some time outside together—and those walls can start coming down.

Peer support doesn’t mean having all the answers. It means showing up, walking beside someone, and reminding them they don’t have to carry everything alone.

This month, reach out to your people. Invite someone outside. Have the conversation. And most importantly, keep showing up for each other.

We were never meant to walk it alone.

🎗️ September is National Su***de Prevention Month.

At Route Step Outdoors, su***de prevention isn’t just something we talk about in September. It’s part of why we do what we do all year long.

Sometimes getting through a hard season starts with something simple—getting out of the house, getting into the woods, sitting around a campfire, walking a trail, throwing a fishing line in the water, or just having someone beside you who understands.

Our outdoor events aren’t only about the activity. They’re about connection.

They’re about giving veterans, active-duty service members, and their families a place to show up exactly as they are. No judgment. No pressure. Just people supporting people, building relationships, and reminding each other that we don't have to carry everything alone.

This month, check on your people. Make the phone call. Send the text. Invite someone out for a walk. And if you're the one struggling, reach out.

You matter. Your story isn't finished.

If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988. Veterans and service members can press 1 to connect with the Veterans Crisis Line.

🌲 Get outside. Get connected. Keep moving forward.

What an awesome day for Route Step Outdoors! 🌲💚

Today’s Jade Hunt turned out better than we could have hoped for. We had 16 people come out and spend the day exploring the river, turning over rocks, hunting for jade, getting our feet wet, and just enjoying being outside together.

But days like today are about so much more than what we find and bring home. It’s about the conversations that happen while walking the river. It’s laughing together, meeting new people, reconnecting with familiar faces, and giving ourselves a chance to get away from everyday life for a few hours.

This is exactly what Route Step Outdoors is about—getting veterans, service members, and their families outdoors and creating opportunities for connection and community. Sometimes all it takes is a river, a bucket, a bunch of rocks, and some good people.

Thank you to everyone who came out today and made this trip such a great one. Seeing 16 people out there searching, laughing, helping each other, and enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest was pretty damn cool.

And yes… we found some jade! 🪨💚

More adventures to come. This group just keeps growing, and we’re excited to see where we end up next!

Get outside. Find connection. Build community.

🚨 Route Step Outdoors Update 🚨

For everyone joining us for the Rock Hounding Trip on August 15th, the meet-up location and time will be posted later this evening.

Thank you for your patience as we finalize the details. Keep an eye on this page tonight so you don't miss the announcement. We can't wait to get out there and spend another great day exploring together! 🪨⛏️🌲

Unfortunately, we've had to make a change to our August 15th Route Step Outdoors rockhounding trip location. Due to active wildfires in our original garnet dig location, it's not safe for us to head there.

The good news is—we're still planning to get out and do a dig! Our rockhound is working on an alternate location, and we wanted to hear from all of you.

What would you be most interested in digging for? 🪨 Garnets 💚 Jade 🟢 Malachite ✨ Quartz crystals 🌊 Agates 🤎 Jasper 🌲 Petrified wood ...or something else?

Drop your ideas in the comments! We'll see what we can make happen while keeping everyone's safety our top priority.

We're looking forward to another great day on the trail and out in the field with all of you!
