A pre-summer HEAT WAVE is in the forecast for Whatcom County and the surrounding areas. Domestic animals and wildlife can be adversely affected by high temperatures. Below are some precautions pet owners can take to protect their pets, livestock and other animals from the heat.

▪ Do not leave your companion animal in a parked car, even for a few minutes. During warm weather, the inside of your car can reach 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even if you're parked in the shade. Pets that are left in hot cars even briefly can suffer from heat exhaustion, heat stroke, brain damage and even die.

▪ Provide plenty of extra fresh water and shade for your pets and livestock animals so they can stay hydrated and cool. While fans can be comforting to animals, they may not have the same cooling effect on pets that they do on humans.

▪ Pets need regular exercise even when it is hot, but extra care needs to be taken with older animals, short-nosed dogs, overweight animals and those with thick coats. On very hot days, limit exercise to early morning or evening hours. Keep in mind that asphalt gets very hot and can burn your pet's paws.

▪ Pets can get sunburned too, and your pet may require animal-safe sunscreen on his or her nose and ear tips. Pets with light-colored noses or light-colored fur on their ears are particularly vulnerable to sunburn and skin cancer.

▪ In summer heat your pet can suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke. These conditions are very serious and could cause your pet to die. You should be aware of the signs of heat stress, which could include heavy panting, glazed eyes, a rapid pulse, unsteadiness, a staggering gait, vomiting, or a deep red or purple tongue. If your pet does become overheated, you need to immediately lower their body temperature. Move your pet into the shade and apply cool (not cold) water over their body to gradually lower the animal’s core body temperature. Apply cool towels or ice packs to your pet's head, neck and chest only. Let your pet drink small amounts of water or lick ice cubes. Most importantly, get your pet to a veterinarian immediately.

▪ Native wildlife acclimates to changing climates, but that doesn’t mean they are not affected by the heat and can suffer from dehydration and other issues. Ground level bird baths — kept filled with clean, fresh water — can provide welcome relief and a water source for a variety of native wildlife including birds and squirrels. Misters provide a great way to provide wildlife with hydration – and they don’t require much water.

▪ Keeping grass and ground cover a bit longer in the summer can provide additional protection for native wildlife as well as provide additional moisture to thirsty animals.

If people see an animal in distress, contact the Whatcom Humane Society Animal Control & Rescue Department (or your local animal control agency) for assistance. WHS Animal Control can be reached at 360-733-2080, Ext. 3017.

ADOPTED ❤️

Meet Cricket!

She is as close to perfect as you will get. and just look at those beautiful brown eyes. Cricket will be 8 years old next month and would love to live in a house with another dog, however she also isn’t opposed to being an only “child”. She is 1/2 black lab, 1/2 golden retriever and weighs about 70lbs. She goes to Doggy Daycare often so is socialized. She loves kitties (she was raised with 3). She can stay home alone while you are at work, and enjoys walks. She rides nicely in the car and loves everybody she meets. She is super nosy, so if she comes to live with you, you will know all the neighborhood gossip!! O e thing about Cricket is she is very afraid of fireworks. But other than that she is a very happy, well mannered sweet girl.
Cricket is spayed and up to date in her vaccines. She is a courtesy listing located in Sedro Woolley WA.

If you are interested in Cricket please fill out an application here and we will get it to her person.

Meet Sienna

Sienna is a 4 yr old Shih Tzu full of spit and vinegar. She is spayed, utd on vaccines and is microchipped. She loves attention. She is sweet and playful with a dash of sass. Due to her love of attention she is hoping to find a home as an only dog and kids over 15. In true Shih Tzu style she is the “class clown” and will never fail to keep you entertained. She would love a new home that could offer an adventurous lifestyle with cuddles on the side. She currently has a haircut but will require regular grooming. If you are interested in meeting or adopting this sweet girl please fill out an application right here.

Meet Maggie!

This little ball of energy is looking for her new forever home. Maggie is a brindle Frenchie weighing about 30 lbs. She is about 5 years old, spayed and has no medical issues. She loves people and kids of all ages and gets along with most dogs big and small and cats too. Dog breeds with super high energy make her a bit uneasy. She is super fun and playful, loves to roll in the grass and even knows how to do somersaults. She’s also down to just chill, cuddle and watch a good movie. Maggie is looking for a home with a fenced yard that she can run and play in and someone who is home at least part of the day, and or has a dog door. Maggie is potty trained, however does need a potty break at least every 4 hours. She loves walks, car rides and mostly just “goes with the flow”.

Maggie is a courtesy listing located in Sedro Woolley WA. If you are interested in meeting her, please fill out an application right here and we will pass it on to her current owner.

If you are looking for the perfect buddy to go hiking, running, walking and adventuring with, Bronco is the guy for you. Bronco is a one year old neutered Husky. He is an incredibly sweet gentle giant. He loves hanging out with his favorite people, car rides, or just lounging around the house. He is always up for a walk, hike, or adventure. He does great with other dogs large and small. He walks well on a leash and has worked hard to learn good leash manners. Bronco is a husky, so he needs a home that understands the breed. He is very food motivated, but doesn’t quite understand that human food isn’t for sharing and will try to sneak some if it’s left unattended. He’s potty trained and has been great around kids and adults. He hasn’t been around cats besides seeing some on walks, he might do well with a confident cat with the right introduction. He loves chewing dog toys and leaves things he is not supposed to chew aline as long as he has enough chewies and or a filled Kong. Despite starting out life as an outside dog, Bronco has completely adjusted to indoor dog life and very much loves being a part of the family. He is very sad when he’s left outside, especially when his humans are gone and will let the neighbors know just how sad he is. Bronco would love an active family that can give him the exercise and attention he needs and deserves. Kids and another dog would be a great bonus but not a requirement for his new forever home. Bronco is neutered, up to date on his vaccines and being fostered in Sedro Woolley WA. If you are interested in meeting or learning more about Bronco you can fill out an application right here

**Adopt Honey: Your Future Adventure Buddy (and Comedic Relief)!**

Meet Honey, a spirited 1-year-old yellow lab who’s eager to bring joy and laughter into your life! This sweet girl is spayed, vaccinated, and potty trained, making her an ideal addition to any active family. With her energetic personality, Honey is looking for a very specific kind of home—could it be yours?

**What Honey Needs:**

1. **Fenced Yard:** Honey loves to race around like a NASCAR pro! A secure, fenced yard with a designated digging spot is essential for her to unleash her inner landscaper and enjoy her nightly zoomie sessions.

2. **Canine Companion:** This playful pup thrives on companionship and would adore a best bud at home. If your dog enjoys tug-of-war, frisbee, or chasing balls, they’ll quickly become inseparable friends!

3. **Active Lifestyle:** With energy levels that rival a toddler on a sugar rush, Honey is always ready for adventure! Whether it’s agility training, scent work, or being your hiking and swimming partner, she’s looking for someone who can keep up.

4. **Dog-Savvy Home:** Smart and quick to learn, Honey can be a bit stubborn. Think of her as your personal trainer—she’ll lift your spirits while you both work on her training. Experience with young dogs will help guide her along the way.

5. **Social Butterfly:** Honey is a people-loving pup and the life of the dog park party! She is the one hosting the ultimate “Welcome to the Pack” paw-ty.

6. **Ongoing Training:** Eager to learn, Honey needs a home committed to providing ongoing training and positive reinforcement. With your help, she’ll blossom into an outstanding canine companion. She is an immature 1 year old puppy and working with a professional trainer.

7. **Understanding Owners:** A little destruction is part of her charm! Honey needs a family that appreciates her playful antics and can help her learn better behaviors through patience and positive reinforcement.

8. **Cat-Free Zone:** While she’s currently learning to leave cats alone, a home without feline friends is preferred to ensure a smooth transition. Honey is all about doggy pals!

9. **Crate Comfort:** Honey enjoys short periods in her crate and will happily use it when it’s open. It’s her cozy den of dreams, but don’t expect her to stay in there long when adventure calls!

If you’re ready for an energetic and cozy companion who’ll keep you entertained and on your toes, Honey is waiting for you! Come meet her today, (she is located in Bellingham WA) and see if you can handle the joy and laughter this special girl brings. She’s ready to wiggle her way into your heart and home! 🐾✨
