Meet 💚!
Evergreen Gardens is a beautiful event venue here in Ferndale and one of our corporate sponsors of the food bank. Not only do they donate a portion of their proceeds each year to the food bank, but the owner, Katie Slottje, is a regular Monday volunteer and serves as one of our board members.
Hear from Katie herself,
“I support my local food bank because I believe everyone deserves access to nutritious food, regardless of their circumstances, and it is a simple way to have a direct, tangible impact on my local community. It is important to me to give back and help make my community a little stronger.”
Thank you to Katie and Evergreen Gardens for their support to our community! If you want to check out Evergreen Gardens, please visit their website: https://eventsateg.com/

Canned soup is always in high demand at the food bank! 🥫

These make for great staples in any pantry. Canned soup has a long shelf life and is perfect for a quick meal that’s ready in minutes with no prep needed. They also have great versatility and can be used as a base for casseroles or larger stews, and can be boosted by adding extra vegetables and proteins.
If you have any canned soup to spare, please consider donating to the food bank!

Blueberries are here at the food bank! 🫐
Summer is a perfect time of year to enjoy blueberries. They have a rich and sweet taste, which makes for a very nutritious and hydrating snack in the summer heat. You can enjoy them as is, or you can add them to oatmeal and yogurts, bake them into muffins and pies, and turn them into jams!
How do you enjoy blueberries? Let us know in the comments!
If you have excess produce, please consider donating to the Ferndale Food Bank.

Ever wondered how our donation process works? 👀

Here’s a behind-the-scenes look at how your donations get out to our community.
Every donation at the food bank goes through a careful multi-step process that includes weighing, sorting, and evaluating to ensure it can be safely distributed to our community.

Thank you for making this possible.

Transcript:
At the Ferndale Food Bank, your donations make incredible impacts on your community. Have you ever wondered what happens when you first drop them off?
First, food is donated to the food bank through a number of avenues, including local grocery stores, community gardens, local farms, home gardens, community food drives, the Rotary Green Bag program, and from community members.
Once we have received the food, it gets weighed so we can record the amount of donated food we receive each year.
The food is then sorted by volunteers to determine what is and isn’t suitable and safe for human consumption. We follow the guidelines from partners such as Feeding America as well as the state and county food safety regulations.
From there, suitable food either goes straight out to the distribution floor if we are in the middle of a distribution, to home delivery boxes if we are packing them that day, or is organized on the shelves for the next distribution.
Any food that is determined not suitable for human consumption goes to our donated livestock boxes that local farmers pick up to feed their animals every day of the week. Other food that livestock can’t eat gets composted.
The majority of all the produce we provide to folks every week is through donations. This serves over 80,000 visits a year.

If you have excess food, please consider donating to the Ferndale Food Bank.

We have lots of corn at the food bank 🌽!
Corn is commonly used in cooking as whole corn on the cob or as kernels. It can be grilled, boiled, steamed, and roasted. Corn works well in a variety of dishes like soups and salads, pairs well as a side vegetable for many meals, and can be eaten as its own meal.

Below is a recipe to make Elote, or grilled Mexican street corn.
1. Heat grill to high heat. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill, and allow to heat for 5 minutes.
2. While the grill is heating, combine cheese, sour cream, chile powder, and garlic in a bowl. Stir to mix.
3. Once hot, place corn on the grill. Rotate until cooked through, about 8 minutes total.
4. Transfer corn to the bowl with the mixture and evenly coat corn on all sides. Optionally, sprinkle cheese, chile powder, and/or serve with lime wedges.

This recipe is provided by Serious Eats.

How do you like to use corn? Let us know in the comments below!

Hi, my name is Mick, and I’ve been volunteering at the food bank for almost 10 years. And my favorite part about volunteering here at the Ferndale Food Bank is working with other volunteers and also the people that come in each week. It’s great to catch up with them.
Hello, my name is Lucas. And my favorite thing about volunteering at the food bank is seeing familiar faces every week.
My name is Erik. I’ve been volunteering here for a year. I like to normalize what may be for some kind of an abnormal shopping situation. So, I have 15 seconds as a greeter to give people a warm greeting. I love it.

Kathi Howell is one of our incredible volunteers here at the food bank! Watch her interview to learn more about her and her experience! You can read the transcript below.

Transcript:
What's your name?
Hi, my name is Kathy Howell.
And Kathy, how long have you been volunteering at the food bank?
It was before the pandemic. So, I had taught kindergarten for 35 years and I was bored being at home. So, I knew somebody was working down here and I came and asked if we could help. It was kind of scary the thought of it. At first, I didn't know anything about it, but it's like a it has grown into like a family. I love coming here. I love seeing the clients. I love that they know my name and they know that I know what they like. I love the people that I work with. They're very encouraging.
Good. Well, we're glad you're here and I'm glad you like it here.
I love it here.
What do you think people should know about the food bank?
I think that the word is getting out and that more and more people do know about the food bank. Um we there are people who come in and say, "Can I get things for my neighbor?" And so we encourage them to sign their neighbor up so it reaches more people. We're not scary here. We're not judgmental. We love meeting new people. We love helping. It's very rewarding that the people will come in here and there are tears sometimes and they're just so thankful for anything. when our inventory was low. So, it's a very positive place to be.
