Memorial Day is a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to others. At VHC, we’re reminded every day that compassion, commitment, and service have the power to change lives. Today, we pause to remember those whose sacrifice made that spirit of service possible.

Behind every healthy child is a mother who never stopped fighting for them. In the rural villages where VHC works, mothers are often the first to notice when something is wrong and the first to take action. They walk to clinics. They ask the hard questions. They show up, again and again, for their families and their neighbors. Today, we're honoring them. And we're honoring every mother in the VHC community who has shown up for communities they may have never met before and left a piece of their heart there anyway. Happy Mother's Day from all of us at VHC. 💐

Every year, nurses leave their routines, their families, and their comfort zones to volunteer in rural Honduras — and every year, they come back changed. The patients they serve don't forget them. Neither do we. This National Nurses Week, we're celebrating every nurse who has given their time and tremendous talent to VHC's mission. You make care possible where it's needed most. Thank you!! 💙💙

There are roughly 90 practicing ophthalmologists in all of Honduras. For a country of 10 million people, that gap is staggering.

VHC's Eye Care program (formerly Optical Care) works to close that gap, bringing vision screenings and eyeglasses directly to rural communities that would otherwise go without. Watch the video to see what that looks like on the ground.

Today, we recognize World Optometry Day and the essential role optometrists play in advancing global health.

Access to vision care is critical, not only for individual well-being, but for education, productivity, and quality of life. Through our Eye Care Project, we’ve seen how screenings, referrals, and eyeglasses can create meaningful, lasting impact in rural communities.

We’re grateful for the optometrists and volunteers who make this work possible and help expand access to care where it’s needed most. 💙

What if the simple act of washing your hands could change the course of a child's life? 🧼 In 2025, 455 students in rural Honduras received WASH training, learning the water, sanitation, and hygiene practices that protect entire communities from preventable illness. When children learn these skills, they bring them home. To their families. Their neighbors. Their futures. That's how real, lasting change spreads.

Before VHC launched its Rural Village Project, women in remote Honduran communities had to walk hours just to reach prenatal care. That's changing. Read about our ongoing journey toward safer maternal health and the real lives being transformed along the way.

What does access to healthcare mean to you? Tell us in the comments ⬇️

Before VHC launched its Remote Village Project in 2006, women in the rural communities we now serve often faced a long, difficult journey—often walking for hours just to reach prenatal care.

As we wrap up a powerful week of eye care in Honduras, we’re reflecting not only on the patients served—but on the people who made it possible. In this video, a high school student who volunteered this week shares her experience assisting one of our doctors, serving as a translator, and witnessing firsthand the impact of care for patients who otherwise wouldn’t have access. Her gratitude and perspective are a reminder that service changes everyone involved. 💙

Watch her story and help us celebrate a meaningful end to an incredible week!

Another powerful day of eye care in Honduras! Our Eye Care team set up in La Paz, with plans to serve 400 patients by the end of the day. By 7:30 a.m., nearly 150 people were already lined up around the block, hopeful for the chance to receive vision care.

With the incredible support of the American Red Cross, the Rotary International La Paz Chapter, volunteer students, and the school hosting the event, today was a true example of collaboration in action. 😎
