Basil is the best boy❤️ Once a racehorse who just wasn’t quite fast enough to win, then a number at a kill pen in the endless abyss, now with a whole new outlook on life to just enjoy living as the best version of himself!

A little piece of peace from the farm❤️

Things have been quieter on here as we prepare for our upcoming event, and then my fiancé Steve and I’s wedding is just around the corner.

So tonight, no big update, just our horses at sunset and a quiet reminder of the beauty of why we do what we do.

Happy Sunday from mama Holly & baby Berry❤️

Thank you all so much for the sincere love and support over the last few days with all the changes at the rescue within the herd. I wanted to share that as of last night we completed our fundraiser goal for Fern & Tarragons end of life care🪽Thank you so so much truly for always having our back and showing up for our herd in every way. We couldn’t do this without you.

Little Berry is growing up so fast and becoming such a social butterfly. Holly is getting there one step at a time but we are moving at a pace that’s comfortable for her. That is something of so much importance to me with our rescues, we work to achieve the goals, but we work together at a pace that is specially designed just for them. I think in the long run it helps build the confidence on such a deeper level, to really help them to their core.

I have a huge question to ask this community right now, and it’s honestly one of the hardest ones I have to ask.

When we fundraise for our rescues to be able to bring them in and support them during their time here, that initial funding is usually gone within the first one to two months during their quarantine period. This is when they typically need the most extensive care and support. For both Fern and Tarragon that was exactly the case, big physical rehab cases that we didn’t know their odds but gave it all we had for each of them thanks to you.

It is one of the hardest things for me to do to ask for fundraising in these moments because it seems so insensitive given the situation, but I have to remind myself this is something I have to do in order to continue to help more and give them that peaceful end of life they deserve. And remind myself that this community is always so amazing to step up and help in times of loss and support.

I would really love to start an end of life care fundraiser for these two to help cover their expenses. Typically when we help a horse cross the rainbow bridge it costs around $1000. Roughly $500 for the vet to come to our farm with all her materials and supplies and help them pass as peacefully as they can, and then roughly another $500 to have our end of life caretaker take them away as we cannot burry them here on our farm.

I would like to start a fundraiser to hopefully raise $2000 so Fern and Cloves rainbow bridge funds are covered❤️🌈

I shared this earlier on my stories and we have been able to raise $762 so far. If you would like to donate, please know how much it means to us and the herd in a time like this❤️

“What gets you through these moments?”

The number one question I get asked when we have to say goodbye.

My answer is actually quite simple. They know they were loved.

Rescue has a lot of different definitions and meaning to people. To me, it means exactly that. To love.

To show up on the good days, and even the hard days, but to make sure we are giving them all we’ve got because they deserve that from at least one person in their life. The horses that come through our doors are often neglected, closed off, so checked out of their own bodies because it’s easier to be shut off than to be tuned in when your life is a living hell.

Rescue to me means bringing back their light, that spark, and meeting them where they are at, honoring them every day for exactly who they are no matter how long or how short we have with them.

Tarragon and Fern got exactly that, although it may not always be the happy ending we hoped for with an adoptive family, they got their happy ending here with us. With a home, a herd of their own, a full belly, and an opportunity to know what peace and love is with humans before they left this earth.

Both of them came into the rescue with severe physical trauma and I likely knew the outcome and extent of their situation, but that doesn’t mean it would change anything for me. They still deserve a chance and deserve someone to fight for them. No longer just a number, or one face in the sea of hundreds waiting for the unknown or their uncertain fate. I am honored to have known them and been a small part of their journey, but a small part that hopefully made the biggest impact to them.

Joining our heavenly herd with dignity, honor, and peace.

Our memorial flowers are just another way we do that for them and have been for years. To show they are beautiful and cared for here on earth, and in the afterlife.

She lost her friend.

We said goodbye to three.

Yesterday freaking sucked and sometimes that’s the only word I can gather.

As I shared in some of our stories, we knew yesterday was going to be Tarragons last day. His old tired body was slowing down & I will always stand by it’s better to let them go on a good day than let them suffer.

But honoring those words, there were two others that joined Tarragon in our heavenly heard yesterday. For those of you who have followed along with Tarragons story, you know he came in with a buddy named Cowboy. Cowboy was not apart of our rescue but loved dearly by the kind hearted woman who brought him in. Cowboy also in his mid twenties, with crippled knees as big as softballs and a back fetlock that was unfixable at his age. Those two buddies met each other in greener pasture with a whole new set of legs.

Lastly, our sweet Fern. This one hurt. I love all our horses of course, but our mares capture my heart greatly. Fern came to the rescue so closed off, walls built, almost feeling mad at the world. I don’t blame her. She was bought and sold by horse traders & kill buyers with an old broken pelvis, extreme arthritis multiple different parts of her joints throughout her legs, extremely sore back, and so much more which all combined within a senior horse was a recipe for disaster. We tried moving her to one of our retirement pastures to see if she could enjoy pasture life, but her body declined quickly.

With her, came Clove. Her right hand lady throughout this whole traumatic experience. Bonded at the hip and never leaving eachother’s side.

Clove knew Fern was struggling, and was there to support her through the whole experience as she has since day one.

After our vet evaluated her & we made the call, Fern was peacefully laid to rest. Clove slowly inched over and laid next to her friend in mourning. She took a few deep breaths, closed her eyes, and just stayed in the present moment as long as she could. We waited until she decided on her own time she was ready.

The last time I saw this was when I laid Luna to rest and Piper said her goodbyes.

These relationships are just so special to them. And I want to share how truly proud of am of Fern on this journey despite everything she has been through. I shared how reserved she was first coming in to Kataluna, but the mental transformation in her was one I will never forget. She slowly overtime became one of the friendliest of the herd, the first to greet you at the fence, and ask for cuddles and hugs. In these moments where the goodbyes can be so hard, I hold onto that. Where she felt comfortable enough, and safe enough to open up her doors so we could love her how she deserved to be love. We really do love you Fern, and we will continue to take care of Clove in your honor❤️
