Are you interested in what the word "Amani" means in Swahili? As Peter Mageto worked with U.S. students in funding and building the library in his village in southwest Kenya - The Amani Reading Centre - they remember him explaining that Amani means peace. But he said it is more than the absence of war. It is a holistic peace, of body, mind, spirit. It reflects a sense of harmony and calm. We hope to bring this to the beautiful green hillside where the Amani Centre compound is located.

Former Amani team members - take a look at this! Sonya Morris (June team leader) and Amani's nurses - Hellencynthia and Jason - have reorganized the Amani Memory Wall in the Ekerenyo Amani Health Centre kitchen/diningroom. There is a picture of every team (21 of them) that has been there. On the left are the Pioneers-the ones who went on the very first trip in 2006, and those who held the first medical camp in the Reading Centre in 2010. On the right is a list of names of every U.S. team member and the year they were there. There have been over 100 of you from 21 states and Canada.
Asante sana for all that you from the U.S. and the local Kenyans have done as partners to bring Amani to where it is now. You brought so much love and enthusiasm over the years!

Throwback Thursday: Looking back 20 years to our first trip to Kenya. The first picture shows our arrival in 2006- we stopped in the road in front of the newly completed Amani Reading Centre. I greeted a man passing by as girls from a nearby school looked at us hesitantly! We were the first Mzungus, white people they had ever seen. The second picture is on the same red dirt road, 20 years later - a couple of weeks ago - a team member (my daughter Lise) is on HER first trip, greeting a man passing by Amani Reading Centre and Health Centre!

Our June 2026 Medical Camp is in the books! Because of all who donated specifically to this camp at our Sept 2025 Fundraising Gala, over 1100 people coming from villages for miles around received the following services:
Medical consults and treatments (194)
Lab tests (387)
Eye care (51 cataract surgeries, 292 pairs reading glasses and 68 pairs distance glasses. )
Dental care (176 extractions, 32 partials and 1 full set dentures.)
Physical therapy (151 treatments),
Ultrasounds (109),
X-rays (20 in its first 2 days),
Cancer screenings (71 prostate, 97 cervical and 102 breast with 31 referrals)
Our team of 7 from the U.S. served as assistants to the extremely capable Kenyan professionals. It was our pleasure to work together with them! Thank you to U.S. team leader, Sonya Morris, for a great job!

“Good evening everyone.

Today, the school successfully participated in the Music Festival, marking our very first attempt in such a competition. Due to the restricted number of participants allowed by the governing body, only 13 learners per class were selected from PP1, PP2, and Grade One to represent the school.

The learners were accompanied by three teachers and one board member who supervised and coordinated all festival activities.

The school presented two items:
• A Swahili presentation by PP1 and PP2 learners
• An English presentation by Grade One learners

The performances were well presented, and the learners displayed great confidence, teamwork, discipline, and courage throughout the event. We are proud of their effort and representation despite this being our first participation.

We are currently awaiting the official results to determine whether the school will proceed to the next level. The outcome will be communicated tomorrow once officially released.
