Jane Ingold, a WEC member and librarian at Lilley Library, shared a book the library recently acquired that may interest you: “Wicked Witch of the West: The Enduring Legacy of a Feminist Icon by Lona Bailey (description below)

Did you know that you can check books out from Lilley Library even if you are not a student or staff/faculty member? Community member cards are available!

Description:
"More than 125 years after her introduction, the Wicked Witch of the West remains an icon of popular culture. Known by many names-from “The Wicked Witch of the West” to Evillene, Elphaba, and Theodora-she consistently defies expectations and wields her power unapologetically. At the heart of her everlasting appeal is her embodiment of feminist ideals that resonate today.

In Wicked Witch of the West: The Enduring Legacy of a Feminist Icon, Lona Bailey explores the radical feministic undertones of one of the most enduring characters in popular culture. Introduced in 1900 through L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Wicked Witch has captivated generations as both a symbol of fear and empowerment. More than just a villain, she embodies rebellion and resistance, refusing to conform to the roles historically assigned to women. This book traces her transformation over the past century, highlighting how she has evolved through countless adaptations from The Wizard of Oz to the film adaptation of Wicked while maintaining her core identity as a powerful, defiant figure. The Run for Women 5K is more than a race. It's a reflection of what the Women's Engagement Council is all about. The WEC at Penn State Behrend is dedicated to fostering connection, empowerment, and community among women — and this event is one of the ways we bring that mission to life every year.

When you register for the Run for Women, you're not just signing up for a 5K. You're joining a community that shows up for each other — on the course and beyond.
We'd love to see you there.

Jane Ingold, a WEC member and librarian at Lilley Library, shared a book the library recently acquired that may interest you: “Ghosts of the Farm: Two Women's Journeys Through Time, Land and Community by Nicola Chester (description below)

Did you know that you can check books out from Lilley Library even if you are not a student or staff/faculty member? Community member cards are available!

Description:
"Pioneering Miss [Julia] White, a woman who lived in Nicola Chester's village eighty years earlier, realised her ambition to farm during World War II. Nicola, too, dreamed of becoming a farmer in the present day, but working with horses was the only path open to her. Was it easier for women to become farmers in the 1940s than it is now? Moving between her own attempts to find ways to be a farmer and Miss White's modernisation of a derelict farm, Nicola explores the landscape, wildlife and people that connect their lives--and the ghosts that flit between their worlds. Increasingly, Nicola's journeys into past and present entwine, and she begins to question Miss White about those farming methods that have left Nicola fighting for a living countryside in the modern day. In telling this forgotten story of Miss White, Nicola vividly brings to life a rural world both gritty and glorious, encouraging us to find purpose and hope as we create new rural communities around us."

Jane Ingold, a WEC member and librarian at Lilley Library, shared a book the library recently acquired that may interest you: “For the Sun After Long Nights: The Story of Iran's Women-Led Uprising" by Fatemeh Jamalpour and Nilo Tabrizy (description below).

Did you know that you can check books out from Lilley Library even if you are not a student or staff/faculty member? Community member cards are available!

Description:

"In September 2022, a young Kurdish woman, Mahsa Jîna Amini, died after being beaten by police officers who arrested her for not adhering to the Islamic Republic’s dress code. Her death galvanized thousands of Iranians—mostly women—who took to the streets in one of the country’s largest uprisings in decades: the Woman, Life, Freedom movement.

Despite the threat of imprisonment or death for her work as a journalist covering political unrest, state repression, and grassroots activism in Iran—which has led to multiple interrogation sessions and arrests—Fatemeh Jamalpour joined the throngs of people fighting to topple Iran’s religious extremist regime. And across the globe, Nilo Tabrizy, who emigrated from Iran with her family as a child, covered the protests and state violence, knowing that spotlighting the women on the front lines and the systemic injustice of the Iranian government meant she would not be able to safely return to Iran in the future.

Though they had met only once in person, Nilo and Fatemeh corresponded constantly, often through encrypted platforms to protect Fatemeh. As the protests continued to unfold, the sense of sisterhood they shared led them to embark on an effort to document the spirit and legacy of the movement, and the history, geopolitics, and influences that led to this point. At once deeply personal and assiduously reported, For the Sun After Long Nights offers two perspectives on what it means to cover the stories that are closest to one’s heart—both in the forefront and from afar."
