Tree of Peace

Nearly 1,000 years ago, the great tribes were at war, and in the midst of conflict, a male child was born to live a mission of peace.

When he grew, he visited each Indian nation, planting peace trees, bringing harmony and tranquility to the land.

This ancient story inspired Mohawk Indian Chief Jake Swamp on his own mission of peace, a mission that brought him to Ephrata on April 26, 1997.

Chief Swamp visited the Ephrata Eicher Arts Center for a lecture and peace tree planting ceremony. The peace tree, Swamp noted, is a symbol of man's "caring for the environment and for each other".

Chief Swamp was one of the leaders of the Mohawk Nation Traditional Council. A member of the Wolf Clan, he lived on the Akwesasne Mohawk reservation, located along the St. Lawrence River near Massena, New York. He passed away in 2010.

In 1983, Swamp started the Tree of Peace Society. He crisscrossed the globe countless times bringing the Native American message of peace and a story of renewal. The Tree of Peace Society tries to bring awareness to their culture and history. About a 1,000 years ago, our native nations were at war with one another. The Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and the Seneca.

The tree the peacemaker planted was a white pine, which has five needles, representing the five nations. The white pine grows strong and tall, so the tree can be seen from long distances, reminding people of the peace. And finally, the tree is always green, symbolizing the continuous nature of peace.

The white pine Tree of Peace is located between the Eicher Arts Center and the EPAC by the entrance to the trail system.

Over the years the brass plague marking the trees importance disappeared. Eicher Arts Center has recently replaced the plague.

Next time you are in the Thomas Grater Park, take time to stop by the Tree of Peace and know it was planted as a symbol of peace for many generations to see.
