Bill Ayres is one of the reasons Center for Food Action exists today. His vision helped shape the anti-hunger movement and strengthen community-based efforts to address hunger across the country.

When H.R.1 was enacted last July, unprecedented cuts and structural changes to SNAP posed harm to families, older adults, and veterans across the nation.

According to April 2026 data, New Jersey SNAP participation has declined by more than 40,000 residents. This includes 21,815 children. Nationwide, SNAP participation has declined in every state, with more than 4.5 million people losing access to this critical nutrition support.

For 50 years, Center for Food Action has worked alongside our community to help neighbors access the resources they need during times of hardship.

Because of our incredible volunteers, donors, supporters, partners and staff, we’re able to provide groceries, help families remain safely housed and connected to utilities, support children facing food insecurity, grow fresh produce, advocate for stronger nutrition programs, and bring our community together through service.

📊 New data from Feeding America shows that food insecurity is getting worse for families in Bergen County.

More than 25,000 children are experiencing food insecurity, a 51% increase in just one year. Overall, more than 107,000 Bergen County residents are impacted.

For many families, summer brings added pressure as children lose access to school meals, utility bills increase with the heat, and the cost of gas and groceries continues to stretch household budgets.
