We're proud to work with the Village of Saranac Lake on this important initiative.

Two things I hear over and over from residents are (1) that it has become too expensive for working people to live here, and (2) that it is incredibly frustrating to see vacant or deteriorating homes in a community where housing is so difficult to find.

There isn't one simple solution to either problem. But I think part of our housing strategy needs to start with something pretty basic: taking better care of the housing we already have and helping year-round residents stay in their homes.

The Village is working with Adirondack Roots to pursue $450,000 in federal funding to repair existing single-family homes.

Anyone who owns a home knows that when major repairs get put off they don't get cheaper. Properties deteriorate, and eventually a home that could have remained part of our year-round housing supply becomes much harder to save.

“The program can support a range of eligible projects, including housing rehab and infrastructure to support existing housing,” Village Manager Brandee Reiley said in an email. “We are interested in hearing ideas from the public to determine the direction for an application.

"Single-family housing rehabilitation is one that we know would be a great benefit to our residents,” she added.

A public hearing will be held Aug. 24 to solicit project ideas for the grant. The application is due at the end of September.

Thanks so much to everyone who supported this important community project.

It is supported by $600,000 from New York State Homes and Community Renewal’s (HCR) Affordable Homeownership Opportunity Program, which provides financing to housing developers to create affordable single-family houses, condos and co-ops. HCR’s Affordable Homeownership Development Program, which supports municipalities and non-profits that create or improve affordable one-to-four family houses, provided $200,000. Grants from Adirondack Community Foundation and contributions from Keene residents and Keene Congregationalist Church offset additional costs.
