Going through old pics of Omar and found this from the time he met Santa in 2017! Pictured with a hen we lost many years ago, Dot. This is one of the harder losses we’ve had. How could anyone not be heartbroken to lose such a perfect guy? 💔

The littlest, bestest, cutest, most special guy is gone. We rescued Omar just over nine years ago. He was our third rooster. He was hilarious, chatty, confident, so sweet to his hen friends. He got sick suddenly on Monday and by the time his vet appt this morning came around, he was gone. We believe it was something neurological as his necropsy didn’t show anything obvious and he was stumbling around a bit. It feels unreal. He was such a staple of the sanctuary - our first logo was an outline of him! Having to move on in a world without Omar is incredibly unfair. While we are so glad he didn’t suffer long, we are so sad we didn’t have time to prepare to say goodbye. Rest easy, little boy. Words fail at doing your life justice.

The only Flock camera we support. We’ve had a camera set up to keep an eye on Lavender the chukar and make sure she’s recovered from her illness and isn’t just putting on a show for us. Sometimes it’s hard to see her though because Ernie loves standing right in front of it.

In the ten years we’ve had the sanctuary, we’ve only had one animal dumped at our place and consider ourselves lucky for that- many other rescues have had it happen far more often. That animal isn’t even a bird, it’s our Smudge! Eight years ago today, we found her tucked next to the door of one of our chicken coops (the first picture is the day we got her). She was on death’s door - weighing just over two pounds, barely able to breathe with her sinus infection, covered in infected wounds, we snatched her up and got her inside while awaiting a vet appointment. When she got spayed, we found out her uterus was also infected. She has FIV, a cataract eye, and destroyed nasal cavities to this day - meaning she’s often covered in goo. Due to her early neglect, she’s also topped out at 5.5 # - she’s perma kitty sized! We’ve had times when we thought she wouldn’t recover from her FIV flare ups but we are fortunate that she always has. We don’t know how long we’ll have with Smudge but as of today, eight years later, she’s doing as well (and sassy) as ever! We believe her wounds were caused by other cats wherever she was as she hates cats. We do a lot of toggling to make sure she gets human attention and the other two cats are happy, too! It’s a lot of work to have such a special little kitty, but we are grateful every day that is she was going to be dumped, it was with us. She makes every day brighter for us. And the fact that she’s objectively the cutest cat ever doesn’t hurt, either. Thank you for putting up with us and still loving us, Smudge. It’s not easy to be a disabled kitty cat sometimes but she never holds the things we have to do to keep her healthy against us (vet visits, ear/nose cleanings, medication). We love you with all of our hearts and we have yet to have a visitor to our home that doesn’t feel the same when she comes running and purring toward them. Happy 8 years Smudgy, here’s to 8+ more!

Our post yesterday is getting quite a bit of traction. We don’t argue with Zionists or keep their lies up on our page generally as we have a simple core belief - there is nothing we can say that three years of photographic, video, and testimonial evidence haven’t already said. But to those still confused or trolling the comments. We do not condemn resistance. We don’t condemn it when our birds do it, and we don’t condemn it when Palestinians do it. Hope this helps!!!

When you ask us if you’ll be seeing us around at any vegan events, the answer over the last couple of years has been a resounding “no”. Why? Because we don’t need money enough to vend alongside monsters. Because we value human life as much as non-human life. Today marks 3 years since the escalation of the first live-streamed genocide and we are still surrounded by humans not only lacking the courage to speak up, but allowing hate at their events.

We have included a letter we sent over two years ago about Zionist vendor, Dirty Snouts, being allowed to not only vend but sell offensive merchandise (like the sticker pictured) at Madison Vegan Pop-Up and other local events. We had additional signatories on our letter. We’ve included the message we received last year from Madison Vegan Fest when we asked if Zionist vendors would be allowed. We refuse to whitewash a genocide with the faces of our animals, we refuse to participate in the idea that “unity” means ignoring violence. If you think events can’t succeed while also acknowledging a genocide, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

The Big Gay Market - Madison, WI created their own petition of artists against genocide and are the biggest, most successful markets we do (come see us at the spooky market on 10/25)! We don’t have much power, we have felt sick to our stomachs nearly every day for three years. But we have the power to reject the idea that human and non-human animal liberation aren’t intrinsically tied together. We reject the enabling of abusers, covering up of sexual assault, and so many other horrors that exist in the prominent vegan community.

We are still vegan. We still advocate for non-human animals. We condemn Zionism. We do not condemn resistance. It’s been a disheartening and lonely realization we’ve come to over the last three years that we don’t belong in the community we once felt so connected to. But it’s nothing compared to what Palestinians face daily. It’s a tiny price to pay to stand strong on the lowest bar of morality. F**k genocide. F**k Israel. And f**k anyone that both sides an apartheid state.

Thank you to all our auction donators and bidders! We raised $415 this time around which goes a very long way for a small sanctuary like ours. We will be mailing out prizes this week and be in touch with those who won items to pick up/customize!
