Who We Are
The Star Legacy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to stillbirth research and education. We are a community of parents, families, and friends of stillborn babies who are dedicated to reducing the number of families that endure such a needless tragedy. Star Legacy Foundation is headquartered in Minnesota with 8 Chapters across the United States. We Believe…
*Many stillbirths are preventable.
*Expectant parents should be informed about stillbirth risks and educated on ways to protect their pregnancy.
*Standard prenatal protocols should include a third trimester ultrasound to identify known stillbirth risk factors and subsequent management through home fetal monitoring when risk factors are identified.
*A national stillbirth registry should be created with mandatory participation to accurately collect stillbirth data.
*Stillbirth autopsies should be encouraged and performed consistently with established protocols.
*Stillborn children should be recognized with a certificate of birth.
*Families deserve and are entitled to support and guidance when facing the delivery of a stillborn child.
*Stillbirth, birth injury (cerebral palsy and others), premature birth and miscarriages may have some common denominators – finding answers to stillbirth may enlighten the path to reducing miscarriage, premature birth, and birth injury. The Star Legacy Foundation was created to honor the memory of precious children who live in the stars, but had an enormous impact on those of us here.

A loss mom is asking for your advice. 🫶

She and her husband faced an impossible decision.

Now she’s struggling with what to say when people ask what happened. Her daughter is deeply loved. She was wanted. And losing her has left an enormous hole in their lives.

If you have experienced something similar, what would you want this mom to know?

What helped you find the words when people asked what happened? How did you handle feeling misunderstood or judged? And what helped you feel like you belonged in a community of other grieving parents?

Halloween can be hard when your baby is no longer here.

You may be thinking about the costume you would have picked out. The Halloween parties you would have attended. The little hand you would have held while trick-or-treating. The memories you thought you would be making this year.

There can be so many moments you imagined that never got the chance to happen. And that grief is real.

So if tonight feels too hard, please give yourself permission to protect your heart.

You can leave a white pumpkin on your porch as a subtle reminder that someone should be here who isn’t. You don’t have to answer the door. You can leave the lights off. You can go somewhere else for the evening. You can skip the party. You can stay home. You can make a quiet space to remember your baby. Or you can do something completely different that helps you get through the night.

There is no right way to spend Halloween after baby loss.

To every parent missing their baby tonight, please know that we are thinking of you and your baby. Today and always. 🤍

At the end of each month, we make space to remember the babies who are on our hearts, especially in October.

We understand that Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month is so needed, but can also feel extremely heavy.

Whether they were due, born, wished for, or passed away this month, celebrated a birthday, or simply feel especially close in your thoughts right now, their lives matter and they deserve to be remembered.

1 in 4 women will lose a baby during pregnancy, delivery or infancy. ❤️‍🩹

Behind that statistic are so many different stories, different losses, and different kinds of grief.

Baby loss is complex. There is no right way to grieve, and there is no hierarchy of loss. One loss should never be compared to another. Every baby matters, and every family deserves to have their experience recognized and supported as their own.

If you are missing your baby, we want you to know this:

We understand.

You don’t have to explain your grief. You don’t have to prove that your loss was significant enough to deserve support. And you don’t have to go through this alone.

After losing a baby, it can feel like no one around you truly understands.

You may find yourself explaining what happened, explaining why you’re still grieving, or wondering if anyone else thinks about your baby as much as you do.

You shouldn’t have to explain your baby to someone who already understands. 💗💙

Our Peer Support Program connects families who have experienced loss with a trained peer companion who understands the unique experience of losing a baby.

You can come exactly as you are. There is no judgment, no expectation to have the “right” words, and no timeline for your grief.

We’ll do our best to connect you with someone who has experienced a similar type of loss and who you can feel comfortable sharing your baby, your story, and the hard days with.

And if you’ve experienced loss yourself, you can also become a trained Peer Companion and be that person for someone else.

Because sometimes sharing what we’ve lived through can help us heal, too. And sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer another grieving parent is simply the reassurance:

“I understand. You’re not alone.”
