Celebrated the Burnside Bridge centennial with our union friends from IBEW and our member Mary Jo from the transportation department. It was a fabulous day and a great opportunity to hang out with our bridge operators, maintenance workers and transportation peeps! Multnomah County works because we do! Happy 100 birthday Burnside Bridge!

STOP REPRODUCTIVE INJUSTICE! STOP ICE!

President Jamie Brown of National Nurses United says, “Nurses believe everybody has the freedom to move and the freedom to stay in search of a better life. We demand that this war against immigrant communities ends now. Nurses don’t believe any human is illegal; we care for everyone.”

Attacks on immigrants threaten their access to health care, including reproductive care.

National Mobilization for Reproductive Justice demands:
Make hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes into safe havens for immigrant patients and staff

So excited for our local 88 sibling Hoa Theresa Vu and proud of her daughter Sophia Thai! Congratulations!!!🥳🦋💚

This week, I am sharing a photo of AFSCME Family Scholarship winner Sophia Thai and her mother Hoa Theresa Vu, a member of AFSCME Local 88/Council 75 in Oregon. A few years back, Sophia worked with other local high school students to raise funds and spread awareness of blood cancer. Along the way, she recognized the language and cultural barriers experienced by some patients, and she came away with respect for the “dedication of healthcare workers” who “tirelessly supported nervous patients and comforted anxious families...” In her essay, Sophia connects the dots between her volunteer work and AFSCME’s values: “equity within systems, respect for public service, and opportunity for young leaders. Meaningful change isn’t doing a task alone; it is people’s continuous, collective commitment to service. As a Vietnamese-American living within immigrant families and communities, these are the values our foundations are built on.” Thanks to Sophia and her mother for lifting up the values that animate our union and labor movement.
