An R.A. member shares:
"If our turn comes to speak at a meeting, we again try to carry A.A.'s message."
(A.A. Twelve and Twelve, p21)

"I'm tired." "I don't feel well." " I'm just listening." "My day hasn't been good." "I'/m having a relapse." "How tired I am." That's what I heard at an R.A. meeting.

What kind of message is that? It's not the program's message. It's not R.A's message. I know because I was in that meeting and I heard the leader say at least twice that we focus on the solution; that we were to share the solution in R.A.'s suggested literature, not our problems.

Complaining was not the path of the founders of the program. Complaining did not get them well. Focusing on the solution. Sharing the solution. Living in the solution: that's what got them well.

So you don't feel well. You're tired or depressed. The solution is the same. Get out of yourself and be useful to another human being. That's how to feel better.

It works -- it really does. Try it!

*Women regain their health as readily as men*

In the Big Book, on page 104, in the first paragraph, it says:

“With few exceptions, our book thus far has spoken of men. But what we have said applies quite as much to women.”

Today I realize that I originally thought that the Big Book was dated and sexist.

I believed this because of the way it was written. I thought that its directions were only for men. I then found out it was written in 1939.

I now know that this program works as well for women as it does for men.

I am grateful to Recoveries Anonymous, because I now understand that anyone can follow the Big Book’s “clear-cut directions.” It does not make a difference if they are a man or a woman.

If they fully work all Twelve Steps, the way I did in R.A., they will find the same recovery that the pioneers found.

In the Big Book, on page 104, in the first paragraph, it says:

“There is every evidence that women regain their health as readily as men if they try our suggestions.”

"Anonymity is the spiritual foundation of all our traditions, ever reminding us to place principles before personalities."
(Tradition Twelve)

Harvard Business School agrees when it highlights that most people in the general public have not heard of Bill W, co-founder of AA. And yet, he was a person who changed the world with the
Twelve Steps - the sense of mission and principles as part of a God centred way of life, rather than personal charisma keeps it going.

As the Twelfth Steps says:
"Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs."

Try it, it works!

*Ask Him what you can do for the man who is still sick*

In the BigBook, on page 77, in the top paragraph, it says:

“At the moment we are trying to put our lives in order. But this is not an end in itself. Our real purpose is to fit ourselves to be of maximum service to God and the people about us.”

Today I realize that, when I first entered the program, I simply wanted to put my life in order. I wanted to stop hurting others, and myself. I wanted to feel that I had some control—some order—in my life.

I now know my real purpose in the Recoveries Anonymous program and in my life. I have learned that it is to be of maximum service to God and the people
about me.

I now understand that self-centered motives were probably necessary when I began. However, holding on to them would have blocked me from receiving the full benefits of this program.

Thanks to R.A., asking God to show me how I can help others, and then trying to act on this guidance, has become the foundation of my life and of my recovery.

In the Big Book, on page 164, in the second paragraph, it says:

“God will constantly disclose more to you and to us. Ask Him in your morning meditation what you can do each day for the man who is still sick.

The answers will come, if your own house is in order.”

One member shares:
My dependence upon my laptop is second only to my dependence on God. It is my window to the world where I learn, study, visit, attend R.A. meetings and work with others. I have a daily study buddy where we read R.A. literature. I take others through the R.A.Step presentation, all of it on my laptop.

So when it started having problems, I got hot and bothered. My fear cropped up. My resentment cropped up. I asked God to remove these defects, discussed them with someone and threw myself the harder into working with others.

To get this laptop fixed I had to travel to another city. It is a trip that often makes me anxious.
When I checked the website of the repair place, there were no available appointments, and my guidance was I should just show up. The morning I was going to make the trip I checked one more time and there was an appointment. That was a demonstration of God's power, His love, and His way of life. I made it to the train on time and asked Him for guidance about where to sit. Sitting facing forward helps me manage my anxiety. So I made the best call I could, sat down, and started to pray. The journey began and God had directed me to the right place to sit so I could sit facing forward.
I'm on my way now to give my broken laptop to the repair place, and it is only by God's grace that this is happening. I thank God. Yes, I use and depend upon my laptop on a daily basis, but I understand that my real dependence is upon Him who has all knowledge and power.

Another R.A. member shares:
"God, I offer myself to thee -- to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt. Relieve me of the bo***ge of self. Take away my difficulties that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help of Thy Power, Thy love and Thy way of life. May I do Thy will always!"
Third step prayer, R.A.'s Multillith page 28.

Sometimes it's the little things where God demonstrates. Literally little things.
I have chronic illness and many complex health needs, one of which requires regular appointments with a busy podiatrist. She is so busy she has no openings for months; still daily I phone and politely ask if there are cancellations. Today's daily call was made from the bus stop. The secreatary asked where I lived; "In the neighborhood," I replied. "Come now," she told me, "There's an opening in 7 minutes."
I went, was treated, and am now taken care of. That is a difficulty that God took away. Small it may be, but it is a demonstration of His Power, His love, and His way of life.
