Here at NativeBio, Indigenous Data Alliance and D4I Tribal Data Repository we've known for a long time that our current era as coming and we know where it might go badly if Tribes and Indigenous people do not find a way to regulate, control, hide, share and use their own data. doesn't have to be a "stalemate". Knowing this information cannot be overexpressed right now. Bill C5 in Canada and Trump's Big Beautiful Bill are huge threats to Indigenous Data Sovereignty. We aren't anyone's "BioProperty". Tribes, Tribal Leaders, Tribal attorneys and their citizens need to move forward with AI and other tech in the most cautious of ways to ensure they are protected and get the economic and political benefit from their data.

First Nation peoples have always understood the need to protect our natural resources, and increasingly one of our most important resources today is informat...

This is fantastic to read about and know that progress for some Tribes is being made! In 2014, 90 year old Dr. Don Miller, former nuclear engineering at Ohio State University was discovered to have over 20,000 stolen artifacts in his Indiana home from around the world. He died in 2015, after which the FBI began cataloguing and returning artifacts and human remains. Over 150 remains belonged to Tribes of South Dakota. Luckily, good employees of the FBI gave the Oceti Sakowin rapid notice and encouragement to take possession of these remains. NativeBio was there to advise and ensure quick and secure repatriation.

The remains of Muscogee and Euchee ancestors have returned to their traditional homelands after being overseas for more than 150 years.

Native BioData Consortium was a leader in Data Sovereignty since 2009 and now every nation on the planet is worried about building local sovereign infrastructure to protect data resources from prying eyes, "open data" and datascraping AI tools. These National Data Resources which may be developed into intellectual property and social/economic solutions have become recognized a valuable to National Security, economic sustainability and political power. Ironic that Indigenous peoples have led this movement while being targets of exploitation.

Canada's reliance on foreign-controlled digital infrastructure raises concerns about health data sovereignty, security and economic benefits, says George Poulakidas at Genome BC. Other countries prioritize digital infrastructure as a matter of sovereignty, which should prompt Canada to build domesti...

Pope Leo warns about data theft. “Even today, colonialism assumes new forms. It no longer dominates only bodies, but appropriates data, transforming personal lives into exploitable information." ThThese have become the new 'rare earths' of power: vital data which, once aggregated and analyzed, can be used to train predictive models, guide investment strategies, anticipate crises and, above all, determine who and what is deemed to matter."

In Magnifica Humanitas, the pope says just war theory is "outdated," condemns lethal AI weapons and asks pardon for the church's delayed condemnation of slavery.

If any US tribal leaders, need some ideas or language, here is a place to start. is under attack. Frome : The centralization and sharing of genomic data without explicit First Nations governance and consent risks violating First Nations data sovereignty and repeating colonial patterns of data extraction. Without mechanisms for First Nations oversight or accountability, the current initiatives may enable misuse, misrepresentations, and/or unauthorized access to Indigenous genomic information by third parties, in ways that contravene to First Nations laws, values, and interests.
