Frankie was so hungry, he ate concrete.
That one sentence tells you how bad it was.
In Louisiana, Animal Rescue Corps stepped in after a cruelty case left dozens of dogs needing urgent help. The organization traveled to the Dixon Correctional Institute in Jackson, Louisiana, to support the Pen Pals Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Program and left with 41 dogs total: 32 from the cruelty case and nine additional shelter dogs ready for placement.
But two dogs stood out immediately.
Frankie and Froggy.
A bonded pair of French bulldogs who had been starved down to their bones.
Rescuers said they were pitiful to look at. Their bodies showed what they had survived before anyone arrived. And Frankie’s X-rays revealed something even harder to process: he had eaten chunks of ready-mix concrete while starving in his cage.
Not because he wanted to.
Because hunger had pushed him that far.
That is the part that should stay with people.
Neglect is not just a dog missing a meal.
It is a body desperate enough to search for anything.
A cage becoming a whole world.
A dog trying to survive with no one coming fast enough.
Somehow, Frankie passed the concrete in chunks and made a full recovery under ARC’s care. Froggy stayed by his side, and rescuers knew the pair had already endured too much together to be separated now.
Their rescue was part of an overwhelming month for ARC. In just 30 days, the organization took in 268 animals and placed about 200, all while providing medical care, nutrition, and support for animals coming out of crisis.
That kind of rescue is not simple.
It is logistics.
It is emergency space.
It is vet care.
It is patience with dogs who may need to learn, sometimes for the first time, how to feel safe.
Frankie and Froggy are still healing.
But when their forever home comes, they will go together.
Because after everything they survived, love should not ask them to lose each other too.
