Anjiro Initiative Since 2014, our community-driven organization has supported more than 600 scholarships for students in primary and secondary schools in Anjiro.

Anjiro Initiative relies on community contributions to provide grants to schools to cover the cost of schooling fees for economically disadvantaged students in Anjiro, a small farming community in Eastern Madagascar. Throughout the year we engage closely with school administration, beneficiary families and students, and the local government to monitor the progress of our grant making program, ensuring that we are accountable to those we serve.

Welcoming Johan "Joop" Rubens to the Anjiro Initiative team!

We're honored to introduce Joop, our newest Peace Corps Virtual Service volunteer supporting Anjiro's Grant Department. Born and raised in Belgium, with experience living and working in South Africa and the United States, Joop currently serves as Executive Director of Development at the University of California, Santa Cruz, connecting donors with programs in education, research, and community engagement.

His background includes international development work at the Firelight Foundation, which supports community-based organizations serving children and young people across Africa, as well as Belgian Peace Corps service in South Africa focused on HIV/AIDS education.

At Anjiro, Joop brings his expertise in fundraising, grant research, proposal development, and donor engagement to help us build new partnerships and secure resources for Madagascar's students.

In his own words: "I believe deeply in the power of education and in solutions led by people within their own communities."

Welcoming Desi to the Anjiro Initiative team!

We're delighted to introduce Desi, our newest volunteer supporting Anjiro Initiative's fundraising and grant strategy. With more than 20 years of international development experience managing grants, programs, partnerships, and operations across multiple countries, Desi brings deep expertise in building sustainable funding pathways for organizations working to expand opportunity for communities and young people.

At Anjiro, Desi is helping us identify new funding opportunities, develop partnerships with foundations and companies, and position our organization for long-term, sustainable growth.

Her motivation says it all: "I don't claim that we can change the world or transform a society overnight. But helping one child stay in school, continue their education, and have a better chance at building the future they want, that is something real and achievable."

Today is the last day of Open the Door 2026.

A student can pass every exam and have a family fully committed to their education, and still not be able to stay in class. That’s what this campaign is about: keeping students in school.

So far we’ve raised $3,465 of our $45,000 goal. Every gift supports a student’s education, and every gift counts today.

Why do we do what we do?

Our mission: Anjiro Initiative supports charitable and educational programs in economically disadvantaged communities in Madagascar by providing grants to local schools and other community organizations.

Our vision: A Madagascar where every child and young person, regardless of their economic background or geographic location, has access to quality education and the opportunity to build a future filled with dignity, purpose, and possibility.

We stay true to this mission through four core values:

💛 Equity. Every student deserves the opportunity to learn, and we prioritize young girls.

🤝 Community Partnership. Lasting change comes from working alongside communities and listening to local voices.

🌱 Sustainability. Programs that build local capacity and create long-term impact.

🔍 Integrity. Transparency, accountability and responsible stewardship of every resource entrusted to us.

Education is more than an individual opportunity. It’s a catalyst for sustainable development. 🌍

Every student who stays in school builds stronger families, healthier communities and a more equitable future. In 2025, Anjiro Initiative’s work contributed to four of the UN Sustainable Development Goals:

🔴 SDG 1: No Poverty. By removing financial barriers to schooling, we help families invest in opportunities that improve livelihoods for generations.
📚 SDG 4: Quality Education. Tuition coverage, entrance exam fees and academic support open the door from primary school to university.
👧 SDG 5: Gender Equality. We keep a gender balance among our beneficiaries and empower young women to pursue secondary and university degrees.
🤝 SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. We work with local schools, international organizations and community stakeholders to deliver lasting impact.

In 2025, that meant 1,636 students supported, $29,007 in scholarships, and 217 graduates from primary, middle and high school. 🎓

There’s still a long way to go. Our Open the Door 2026 campaign has raised $2,965 of its $45,000 goal, and every gift brings more students into the classroom.

Eric is in Grade 11 at Sabotsy Anjiro High School. He wakes up at 5:30 every morning, loves science, sings, plays soccer, and enjoys cooking dinner for his family after class. His dream? To become a surgeon.

Dreams like Eric’s only come true if students can stay in school. That’s exactly what our Open the Door 2026 campaign is about, and so far we’ve raised $2,715 of our $45,000 goal.

Holiniaina is in Grade 10 at Sabotsy Anjiro High School. She’s up at 4:30 every morning, loves science, reads, plays basketball, and sings. In her own words: “I am not a shy girl, that is why I am passionate about singing.” Her dream? To become a doctor.

Welcoming Pamela Pozarny to the Anjiro Initiative team!

We are honored to introduce Pamela Pozarny, our new Virtual Service Pilot Participant (VSPP), supporting the development of policy brief recommendations for Madagascar's education system reform.

Pamela brings over 35 years of experience working across Africa on sustainable livelihoods, inclusive rural development, and poverty reduction, including 23 years with the FAO as Senior Rural Sociologist, leadership roles with UNDP and USAID, and formative years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in agricultural education in Togo. She holds a PhD in Anthropology from the University of Florida.

Recently retired from the United Nations, Pamela joins us with a clear motivation: "The need is enormous and collaborating with a small yet emerging, ambitious NGO in one of the poorest countries in the world was an attractive opportunity where my support might really make a difference."

Her expertise in policy development, partnership building, and advocacy makes her a tremendous asset to this project, one focused on expanding access to education for Madagascar's most vulnerable and rural youth.
