This is a photo of the incised mortar plaque in the primitive aedicule at the top of the George Douglass Mansion in Morlattan. Located on the south gable wall. Starting at the bottom, you can see the “1”and the “7” starting the date, then to the next row up with “G” for George to the left of the [spinning] quatrefoil, and a faint “M” for Mary
to its right. The top row within the rectangle has a partial “6” to the left, then “D” for Douglas, and what I read as a “5” to the right, although it has
sometimes been read and written as a “3”.

This intriguing and cryptic scribed motif appears twice on a very old door, clearly the work of a skilled artisan. The hearts symbolize love and hope, and their deliberate arrangement forms tulip shapes traditional emblems of a happy marriage and home. Also visible are the upper portions of two complete, symmetrical circles, believed to represent a protective trap intended to ward off evil spirits. These remarkable marks are preserved in the Turner’s stone cabin at the historic Keim Homestead.
