Sensory. Escape. Attention. Tangible. S.E.A.T. gives parents and caregivers a framework for asking a helpful question:

What might this behavior be helping my child communicate or accomplish?

Understanding the possible function can help us make more informed decisions about support.

Observe. Understand. Support.

Understanding behavior starts with observation. What happened right before? Where were you? What was your child doing? What happened afterward?

Patterns over time may provide clues about what a behavior is communicating and what support could help. An ABC data (Antecedent → Behavior → Consequence) sheet can show us those patterns.

Antecedent = what happened before the behavior
Behavior = a detailed description of what the behavior looks like
Consequence = what happens after the behavior in terms of the actions taken

Look for patterns, not just problems.

Sometimes behavior happens when a child wants something they can’t have right now.

Clear choices and simple First/Then language can help a child understand what is available and what happens next.

Understanding what a child wants can help us teach better ways to ask and wait.

Children need connection and attention. Sometimes behavior becomes a way of getting it.

Teaching a child an appropriate way to ask for attention, and responding positively when they do, can reinforce that appropriate behavior.

Support the need for connection and a way to communicate it.

Sometimes behavior is a way of getting away from something that feels difficult or unpleasant.

A smaller step, a short break or teaching a child how to ask for help can make the situation more manageable.

Sometimes a behavior provides sensory input a child is seeking or helps meet a sensory need.

Notice what your child may be experiencing. Another activity that provides similar sensory input may help.

Understand the function. Support the need.

They may look similar from the outside, but sensory overload and a tantrum are not necessarily the same thing.

Sensory overload is a response to the nervous system becoming overwhelmed by sensory input. The person needs reduced stimulation, regulation and support, not consequences.

A tantrum is often a behavior connected to wanting or avoiding something that may decrease when the person gets what they want.

What looks like “acting out” may actually be a sign that an individual’s environment has become too much to process.

Look beyond what you see. Ask the individual what they may be experiencing.

Behavior may look similar but serve different functions. Over the next few posts, we’ll explore the four functions of a behavior: Sensory, Escape, Attention and Tangible, or S.E.A.T..

Every behavior serves a purpose.

When educators and families look at what happens before, during and after a behavior, they can begin identifying patterns that may help explain why it is occurring.

Understanding the function of a behavior shifts the focus from simply reacting to what happened toward identifying what the student may need and finding more effective ways to provide support.

Behavior becomes easier to understand when we get curious about what it communicates.

Behavior often tells us something before a student has the words or the ability to explain what they need.

Instead of only asking, “How do we stop this behavior?” try asking, “What might this behavior be communicating or trying to communicate?”

A student may be seeking help when trying to escape an overwhelming situation, looking for connection or responding to a sensory need. Looking beyond the behavior can help adults respond with greater understanding and more appropriate support.

Understanding the why behind behavior is an important step toward helping students learn, communicate and succeed.

IEP Part 9: The Importance of Tracking Progress

Progress monitoring helps an IEP team understand whether support and instruction are helping a student move toward established goals. Teams may observe students, review work samples, assessments and other information collected over time.

Regular updates make growth visible and help the team recognize when a strategy is effective or when a plan may need to be adjusted.
