We recently gathered with Augusta Township to discuss the dangerous impact of hyperscale data centers in Michigan.

This educational and impactful panel event was moderated by Tim Bruno, of the Rural Michigan Defense Fund (RMDF).

We heard much needed insights from Gwen Klenke (FracTracker Alliance), Prescott Balch (Software Industry Consultant), Michelle Martinez (Director at Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment), Chris Gilmer-Hill (Policy Manager at MEJC), Tammy Clark (Toxicology Twins, Health, Safety and Compliance Professional), and Kristen Meghan Kelly (Toxicology Twins, Exposure Scientist and Industrial Hygienist, US Air Force Veteran).

Shout Out to Wesley, MEJCs Grand Rapids Policy Associate, for helping guide the next generation and organize this event along with so many other committed EJ community partners.

On Monday, July 27th, there was a youth-led press event in Grand Rapids on air quality awareness with Commissioner Marshall Kilgore, MEJC, JustAir, Grand Rapids C4, Endless Opportunities, and the NAACP Youth Council.

The youth voices came from three different local schools; East Kentwood High School, Ottawa Hills High School, and GVSU sharing their personal experiences with poor air quality over the last few weeks and how some of the youth have asthma.

Their direct call out was to :
1. State leaders to pass strong polluter-pay laws in Michigan,
2.The Trump administration to close the JH Campbell Coal Plant

The call to action:
Take youth voices seriously to protect our environment. The children are the future, but their voices are needed now!

Tribal Treaties and Rights are blantantly pushed aside to usher in Enbridge's Line 5 tunnel while it is operating illegally. EGLE and DNR pass permits for the Enbridge's Line 5 tunnel ignoring 70k public comments and Tribal treaty rights.

State regulators authorize Enbridge to build an oil tunnel below the Straits of Mackinac

At MEJC, we believe that advancing environmental justice means centering Black voices and leadership from the beginning.

This Juneteenth, we are extending our appreciation to our staff, community members, and coalition partners.

We show up in so many ways, including our newly formed union, the mothers participating in our environmental justice programs, and the community members helping shape resources like our Consumer Energy booklets. We are grateful to the people who strengthen this movement every day.

We wish you a meaningful and joyful Juneteenth!

Mama, We LIT! fellows kicked off Mama’s Advocacy Week this month ready to raise awareness of indoor and outdoor air pollution and improve air quality in our homes and communities! ✊🏿🌟✊🏾💜✊🏽

Thank you to Congresswoman Tlaib, Detroit City Councilmember Denzel McCampbell, and their teams for educating the Mama, We LIT! fellows on ways to advance air quality solutions, including the importance of cumulative health impact assessments and funding availability for home filtration.

We are excited to continue to remove the sociopolitical barriers between elected officials and directly impacted families to build a better environmental future for all.
