As we continue to grieve and celebrate the wondrous and beautiful life of Curtis Renee, we wanted to share some updates.

For those who did not know them. They were a chef, organizer, child, sibling, friend, community leader and true neighbor.

MEJC as well as the rest of the organizing community are deeply grateful for anything you can do to keep their spirit alive, honor their life, and continue supporting the work that has impacted Detroit in ways that words simply cannot fully depict.

What we call environmental justice is not just specific to modern society. There is evidence of water, air, and soil pollution going back to before the 16th century here in Turtle Island (the United States) and across the world. However, these experiences did not have a shared name that spoke to these specific circumstances and how its impacts seemed to be concentrated in particular communities.

The illegal toxic waste dumping in North Carolina between 1978 and 1982 is the turning point for which the pattern of harm towards our environment being intentionally and alarmingly directed in areas where working class and people of color lived was named. We now universally agree, to call these experiences, environmental racism, and the fight to change that,environmental justice.

Join us at the summit on October 3rd, 2026 where you’ll hear the ways activists and frontline communities have been fighting for environmental justice throughout the state.

In 2025, the DOE issued an unlawful emergency order that forced the J.H. Campbell coal power plant to remain open past its decided-upon closing date.

The US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled unanimously on Friday, September 11, that there was no emergency under federal law that justified keeping the 64-year-old J.H. Campbell Generating Plant online.

“When DOE exercises its section 202(c) authority to compel generation other than as a last resort, including by reversing a generator’s long and carefully planned retirement as it did with Consumers Energy’s Campbell unit, the results are disruptive.” (USCA Case #25-1159, Document #2192454).

We’re putting Art at the Heart of the summit this year!

Through photography, music, graphic design, fashion, protest posters, and more. Creatives have the power to make a statement! They have been telling the stories of environmental injustice and amplifying solutions for decades.

Artists and creatives undeniably helped shape the EJ movement and challenge narratives.

Since we can't imagine a future without creatives, we are hosting a pop-up Movement Art Gallery at the summit. Come check out art from local artists curated by Swords into Plowshares and other Movement Memorabilia.
