We are a black woman-led, grassroots advocacy and leadership development org that inspires mamas of color to take action on US policy change.

What we believe

-Workplace policies should respect the family responsibilities of each worker
-Love defines families and every family should be recognized in the eyes of the law
-Mothers should be able to choose how and where they give birth and society should respect the needs of a nursing mother

We are activist mothers and supporters who are well-equipped to advocate for ourselves and our fami

Created by artist Eva Houston, Work of Love is inspired by the love, strength and stories of mothers and reflects so much of what drives the work at Mothering Justice: uplifting mamas, families, birth workers and the people who care for our communities.

We’re especially grateful to unveil Work of Love in time for In Her Honor Detroit, where we’ll come together to honor mothers lost to maternal mortality, uplift their legacies and continue pushing for a future where every mama has the care, support and respect she deserves.

Our Fibroid Awareness Month Community Conversation has been rescheduled to Saturday, August 15.

When we honor their stories, we strengthen the movement for every mother.

Join Mothering Justice and our partners for In Her Honor, a three-day experience that uses storytelling, art, film, and community to honor the lives of Black mothers and birthing people lost to maternal health complications while advancing maternal health justice.

As a commemorative art and public health awareness initiative, In Her Honor brings together families, advocates, artists, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and community members to shed light on the maternal health crisis, particularly in Black communities, while inspiring meaningful, lasting change.

Together, we’ll remember, celebrate, heal, and build community through a week of powerful experiences across Detroit.

When the air isn’t safe, our communities deserve clear information. Wildfire smoke is impacting air quality across Southeast Michigan. Here’s what you need to know to help protect yourself and your family.

Poor air quality can affect everyone, but it can be especially harmful for children, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with asthma or other respiratory conditions.

If you’re in an area under an air quality advisory:
• Limit prolonged outdoor activity when possible.
• Keep windows and doors closed.
• Use air conditioning or an air purifier if available.
• Check in on family, friends, and neighbors who may be more vulnerable.
• Stay informed by monitoring local air quality updates.

Black boys deserve to make it home to their mamas.

In the wake of the tragic death of Nolan Wells, these mamas are sharing what it feels like to raise a Black child in America. Their words reflect the love, fear, hope, and strength that so many families carry every day.

Every child deserves the chance to grow up safely, to dream freely, and to return home to the people who love them.

Real change starts when mamas are heard.

Last week, we traveled to Washington, D.C., with powerful mamas, advocates, and community leaders to share their lived experiences directly with members of Congress. Charnise Littles shares why caring for mamas, babies, and families must remain a national priority and why the voices of those most impacted belong at the center of these conversations.

This is just one of the many stories we’re honored to share through our Mama Stories series because the people closest to these experiences are the ones who deserve to shape the conversations and the solutions.
