Mothering Justice

We are a black woman-led, grassroots advocacy and leadership development org that inspires mamas of color to take action on US policy change.

What we believe

-Workplace policies should respect the family responsibilities of each worker
-Love defines families and every family should be recognized in the eyes of the law
-Mothers should be able to choose how and where they give birth and society should respect the needs of a nursing mother

We are activist mothers and supporters who are well-equipped to advocate for ourselves and our families, and legislators who are responsive to needs of mothers (and best case scenario, mothers who are legislators!)

This Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month, we’re honoring the strength, culture, care and community that Hispanic and Latina mamas bring to our families and our movements every day.

Motherhood is powerful. Our stories are powerful. And when mamas have the resources, support and freedom to thrive, our communities are stronger.

We celebrate the mamas, caregivers and families whose love, leadership and legado continue to shape generations.

Hosted by Danielle Atkinson and Shamyle Dobbs, Beyond the Pail brings real stories, honest perspectives and meaningful conversations about caregiving, community and the systems that shape our lives.

CBC Week was about meaningful conversation, connection and creating space for our communities to be heard.

Last week brought together leaders, advocates, creatives and community members for thoughtful conversations around access, inclusion, belonging and the importance of creating spaces where Black communities can connect and thrive.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us, shared their perspectives and helped make these conversations meaningful. The connections and lessons from CBC Week will continue to inform how we show up for families and communities.

Black Breastfeeding Week is a reminder that supporting Black mamas means supporting Black families, Black communities and Black futures.

As we close out Breastfeeding Awareness Month, we’re centering the Black mamas who deserve access to the resources, care and community they need throughout their breastfeeding journeys.

This year’s theme, “We All We Got,” reminds us of the power of showing up for one another. When Black mamas are supported, generations are nourished.

Supporting Black mamas is nourishing Black futures.

🤍 Day 1 of In Her Honor reminded us why we gather.

Last night, we came together at Detroit Institute of Arts for a powerful screening of Aftershock, followed by conversation, reflection and community centered on the realities of Black maternal health and the work still ahead.

We’re grateful to the ARIAH Foundation for collaborating with us to create this space and to Danielle Atkinson, Omari Maynard and Shawnee Benton Gibson for helping lead a conversation that centered the voices, experiences and stories that must continue to be heard.

And to everyone who showed up, shared space with us and came ready to listen, learn and reflect, thank you. This is what it looks like to honor the mamas we’ve lost while continuing to fight for the care, dignity and futures Black mamas deserve.

Day 1 may be over, but In Her Honor is just getting started.

Tonight, we continue with a sold-out A Night in Her Honor Gala, followed by In Her Honor Public Exhibition Day on Friday.

Our A Night in Her Honor Gala is officially at capacity, and we are so grateful to everyone who reserved their spot.

Tomorrow, we’ll gather to honor the mamas we’ve lost, celebrate their lives and legacies, and be in community around the work for maternal health justice.
