DPSF is proud to partner with the Detroit Fire Department to secure funding for Community AED's and promote CPR Education. Our Detroit First Responders are expertly trained and compassionate. Great work to the DFD team! The HEARTSafe Community initiative is a national preparedness program created by the Citizen CPR Foundation dedicated to improving outcomes of sudden cardiac arrest. This designation is awarded to cities that demonstrate extreme preparedness in the areas of cardiac emergencies, training, preparation and response protocols.

The program aims to reduce the number of cardiac deaths through collaboration with community partners and increased access to critical medical interventions. In order for Detroit to achieve this milestone, the Detroit Fire Department had to take several steps to fulfill 13 criteria. Some of the requirements include:

Widespread CPR training for residents and city employees
Providing public access to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs)
Aggressive resuscitation protocols for first responders and area hospitals
The implementation of strategies to improve public awareness and intervention. Recent achievements of DFD include:

Over 100,000 residents trained in CPR in the past year alone Citizen CPR+1

More than 500 AEDs registered via the PulsePoint app for rapid location during emergencies fireandsafetyjournalamericas.com

Hands-Only CPR training for all city employees Citizen CPR

Partnerships with Detroit East Medical Control Authority, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, local hospitals, and major organizations like General Motors and Ford Field Citizen CPR+1

Leighton Kirkpatrick celebrated his 80th birthday Wednesday in Detroit — surrounded by the first responders who kept him alive after he suffered multiple cardiac arrests on Christmas Eve.

Today we proudly wrapped up Year Two of Project Genesis, funded by the Gilbert Family Foundation in partnership with the Detroit Medical Center (DMC)!

More than 35 Detroit students spent the summer working in various units throughout DMC, gaining hands-on exposure, training and an inside look at careers in healthcare. Today, they capped off the experience by presenting their final reports on health-related topics—and did an incredible job!

As a special surprise, the Gilbert Family Foundation also provided scholarships to the students in recognition of their hard work and dedication.

A huge thank you to GFF for making this possible; Sheryl Jones and Johnathon Matthews for leading the program; DMC for opening its doors to our students; and DPSCD for helping us recruit this outstanding group of young people.

We’re also grateful to DPD, DFD, Chief Todd Bettison and DFD Community Relations Chief James Harris for sharing with students the important connection between first responders and our hospital partners.

We are thrilled to serve as the nonprofit partner and grant recipient helping make Project Genesis possible. We left today inspired by these students—their work ethic, how much they learned and the confidence they showed in their presentations.

Officer Travis McCulley joined Patti Kukula on a tour of the Marathon Petroleum corporate office on Oakwood Blvd today. The employees enjoyed playing with the first ever DPD Comfort dog, Atlas. Marathon donated funds along with DAC Foundation for DPD’s first Comfort dogs and 40 mountain bikes. We addressed the leadership team at their staff meeting and told the heart warming stories of Atlas’s work to help potential suicidal cases, interactions with children and DPD employees. Thank you board member Whitney Walton for securing the many grants for our programs.
