About Us

Our club was organized June 4, 1931 by ladies who were members of the Garden Department of Des Plaines. In the same year we became affiliated with the Garden Clubs of Illinois, Inc. Club members have participated in exhibiting both in the Design and in the Horticulture Divisions at flower shows throughout the area. We are still involved in Civic projects: designing gardens, planting tree

s and plants, and maintaining garden areas in Des Plaines. We assist the residents at a local nursing home as they make floral arrangements, and also put on programs for Arbor Day. Our club has won many ribbons and awards; among others, The Theodor A. Memorial Award and the Beautify Des Plaines Super Star, presented to the Garden Club by the Mayor of Des Plaines. Members have been honored for outstanding service in the Book of Honor and deceased members have been added to the Book of Remembrance. Over the years, members have participated in our programs, workshops, plant exchanges, horticulture information and environment reports, and flower arranging demonstrations. Many tours have been made to arboretums, members’ gardens, gardens in other communities, and various venues of interest to our members. The Garden Club is now over 75 years old, and currently has 77 members, and continues to grow. The motto of the Des Plaines Garden Club is still “Advancement of Gardening, the Promotion of Civic Beautification, and Conservation of Desirable Native Plant Life”.

Our Annual Des Plaines Garden Club’s Birthday trip was held on Tuesday, June 11th, 2026

The Celebration brought us to Klehm Arboretum and Botanic Gardens in Rockford, IL, and lunch at Mary’s Market and bakery. And enjoyed shopping at the Rock Valley Garden Center before our bus ride home. We dodged some of the rain but managed to get to all our event locations. Congratulations on our 95th year!

PLANTERS THAT THRIVE WHEN
YOU FORGET TO WATER THEM!

Most of us have had our planters FAIL in July because they were planted for someone who waters daily. The moment a busy week breaks the routine, the fuchsia wilts past recovery while the sedum next to it hasn't noticed.
Drought-tolerant flowers don't just survive skipped waterings — many of them bloom harder when the soil dries out.
The pot that thrives on neglect starts with terracotta. The clay breathes and dries faster through the walls — exactly what these plants prefer. Glazed ceramic and plastic hold too much moisture for roots that evolved in dry, fast-draining soil.

Here are a few combinations that improve when you miss watering them.
* Lantana upright + portulaca trailing + dusty miller filler — full sun, water once a week at most. All three evolved on dry hillsides and bloom harder with less attention
* Lavender center + silver falls dichondra trailing + blue fescue filler — terracotta only. The silver foliage deepens in color between waterings
* Echeveria rosettes + trailing sedum + sempervivum tucked into gaps — water once every ten days. The reds and purples intensify during the dry stretches
* Coneflower upright + black-eyed Susan filler + creeping thyme spill — native prairie roots built for long dry stretches. Blooms June through October with almost no intervention
