ANOTHER SUMMER GONE BY

Another summer is nearing its end here in Jet City, and each year we are more and more grateful to be able to serve more homes with more volunteers.

It’s incredibly difficult coordinating a bi weekly lawn services for over 40 homes, but each summer reveals a new crop of neighbors ready to step up and chip in to support our work.

Home maintenance is one of the most expensive and anxiety inducing tasks our neighbors are up against, and we are grateful to be a piece of the pie helping Des Plaines to juggle these difficult times.

We still have two more weekends, so please visit our website to sign up this weekend and help us close out the summer strong. We are grateful for all volunteers new and old.

A VITAL COMMUNITY CORRIDOR

Happy Friday to the members of our Coalition and I hope everyone is geared up for a relaxing August weekend.

We’re personally excited for all the hard work City of Des Plaines Government and Mayor Andrew Goczkowski are doing with the council to revitalize the Lee and Oakton corridor in our beloved city.

For too long, these vital areas have been flat and stagnant, and the community around them has suffered from blight and unusable space. This is a sea in a long line of smart decisions by our city council to right size our town and get us heading in the right direction.

If you haven’t, please stay engaged with the discussions and offer your perspectives and support where possible. All politics are local, so it takes all of us to continue making Des Plaines the best community in America.

USE YOUR PUBLIC FACILITIES

I got the chance to do some of our route planning for the weekend at our City of Des Plaines Government Public Library today and it reminded me how great we have it in Des Plaines.

I’m always checking stuff out at the library but never taking advantage of all the third space amenities they have for us as a community.

From the new Makers Station to the Quiet Meeting Rooms, take a chance to check out some of our great public spaces in Des Plaines this weekend.

TOO HOT TO HANDLE

We’re facing some otherworldly heat this week, and Jet City will be out and about all week passing out cold cases of water and mini fans to those in the community in need of assistance.

Please make sure to check on your neighbors and ensure that your elderly and vulnerable community members are checked in on regularly in this heat.

As always, residents can call the city and non emergency police or fire services for weather and heat related issues, and 911 when the situation requires medical assistance.

AN AREA TO PLAY IN

Sometimes I forget how important our work is in the day to day if running the organization. I think all leaders should have to spend a day or two per month immersing themselves in their core business.

I put a lot of pressure on myself to look at the data and see if we are growing or stagnant. There’s always more people we can help and more citizens who have a wound that only volunteering can fix. So the work continues.

But I’m always grateful for moments like this that stop me and force me to remember the reason we started doing this. To give folks a sense of dignity. It’s hard to worry about data when you want the space to be pristine for a little girl to play.

GRANDMAS WELCOME ALL OTHERS BY APPOINTMENT

We have the unique position of stepping into our Neighbors lives that we take care of. We curate the backyards their grandkids will play in, the space they tend their garden, and the backyard where they enjoy the fruits of their life.

It’s a special position that we don’t take for granted. A lot of people struggle with purpose and meaning these days, and I encourage you to help someone live their best life.

Something as small as planting a garden or mowing a lawn provides dignity, which is the most important thing to us and our collective society. Everything else is just stuff we do to enable our friendship, family, and community.

ALL THINGS ARE BETTER WITH COMPANY

I learned a valuable lesson this week, or maybe had a valuable lesson reaffirmed, which is that all things are better with company.

The older you get, the more you want to do things alone or yourself. Especially if you’re the one in charge. Oh you want to add an extra hour or two onto something I know I can get done faster? I’ll pass!!

With age comes wisdom and with wisdom comes the understanding that all things are better with company. A task that could be done in one hour efficiently could be done in two hours with joy.

I’ve been running Jet City for five years now, so there’s always the urge to do clean ups myself or jump in and take tasks myself but I’ve come to learn if it’s not done with purpose it shouldn’t be done at all. A MOST BUSY SUMMER

Thanks to those who have supported us during the busiest summer to date, as we continue to add neighbors to our Summer Lawn roster well into June.

Our neighbors are struggling greater than ever with affordability, loneliness, and stress, and need our help to persevere through this season of our American story.

We appreciate our community who rally behind our work with donations, volunteerism, and support here on social media. Big or small, each of us play a role in bringing our radical mutual aid work to a bigger population of vulnerable residents.

It's a Jet City Summer, and the team has recently launched our "Rep Jet City" campaign to clear the vaults on our winter/spring clothing.

COME ON OUT THIS WEEKEND

The Coalition has been busier than ever this summer, and a lot of lessons learned in Year 5 of Free Lawns that we are taking with us.

The toughest challenge remains our all-electric lawn mower fleet. There’s a price to pay for sustainability, and we only use green mowers to help us reduce neighborhood noise and gas accidents.

This sometimes leads to reliability issues with the machines, or down time related to batteries dying, but we are committed to our green operations either way.

You can help us this summer by donating to help us by more lawn mower batteries, or signing up for a volunteer day this upcoming weekend or at a date if your choosing. We’d love to have you out.
