Our next Friends from the Field webinar with Blue Hill Heritage Trust will take place on November 5--delve into apple history in the region with Community Tree Steward Jonny Givelber! Learn how we can be better stewards of our apples for future generations.

Jonny Givelber is a Maine Conservation Corps Service member serving as a Community Tree Steward with Island Heritage Trust. After arriving in Deer Isle, Jonny became interested in the ancient apple trees that seemed to be everywhere. Jonny partnered up with the Healthy Island Project to form the Deer Isle Apple Corps, a collaboration of apple lovers dedicated to researching, preserving, and appreciating our apple trees. During his time in Maine, he has found that there are many secrets to be discovered in our apples, and even more potential.

Happy Fall, everyone! 🍂

As we enjoy the beauty of fall on Deer Isle, we're sharing a friendly reminder that Barred Island Preserve is currently closed for trail improvements.

Our contractor, Erin Amadon of Town 4 Trails Services LLC, began her work at Barred Island at the end of September. We truly appreciate everyone's patience, understanding and respect of all preserve closure signage as this work is completed.

On October 13, celebrate the beauty and wonder of autumn by joining us for a Plant ID & Natural History Walk at Scott's Landing with Boot Boutwell!

Join “Boot” Boutwell on an easy to moderate hike for some basic plant identification as well as fun and interesting natural history of some of our common trees, shrubs and wildflowers. We’ll focus on autumn flowers and fruits, as well as a few winter weeds, those hardy non-woody plants whose skeletons decorate the autumn and winter landscape. The walk will include a few seasonal or topical poems and readings as well as some fun tips and mnemonics to help you remember what you
have learned.

All are welcome on these leisurely hikes focused on enjoying nature and connecting with others. No sign-up is required--just show up!

Happy Fall from IHT! 🍁🍂

🌒October is here, and that means Friends from the Field webinar series is back! On Thursday, October 8 we will welcome Michael Goldstein, vice-president of the Mid-Hudson Astronomical Association, for a fascinating look at dark sky observation.

🍄On Friday, October 16, we're thrilled to have mycologist David Porter leading a mushroom ID walk at Crockett Cove Preserve.

Registration is required for both programs.

As we head into the 2026 hunting season, please help us keep our preserves safe and welcoming for everyone.

Expanded archery has begun, and hunting season runs October - December.

If you’re visiting our preserves during hunting season, please wear blaze orange and stay alert for others.

If you'd like to hunt on IHT preserves, please let us know by emailing [email protected]. Before heading out to hunt, check the latest information from Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (IFW) for current dates, regulations and bag limits. Hunting is not permitted at Lisa Tolman Wotton preserve in Little Deer Isle.

The Brooklin Food Corps is hosting a hunting workshop this Saturday at Friend Memorial Public Library in Brooklin. To learn more about this workshop, please contact the library.

The Lily Pond trail improvement project has reached its final phase! 🎉

The Quaco Road parking area has reopened, and construction has now shifted to the Deer Run side of the preserve. That access point will be closed for approximately the next two weeks while our contractor, Erin Amadon of Town 4 Trails Services LLC, completes work in that area.

We’re very pleased with how the project is coming together and appreciate everyone’s patience while these improvements are underway.

After wrapping up at Lily Pond, Erin will head to Barred Island to rebuild the first section of the Barred Island Trail. The trail will be closed while that work is taking place.

Happy September! September is such a beautiful month, with a lovely crispness to the air--in other words, great hiking club weather 😎

This month, Hiking Club with Martha and Jack will meet:

September 2 - Barred Island
September 9 - Crockett Cove
September 16 - Settlement Quarry
September 23 - Fox Hollow
September 30 - Tennis Preserve

There's no sign up for Hiking Club, simply show up! We recommend good walking shoes, a water bottle and layers. Also, if you have binoculars or loupes you like to use, they would be great to bring.
