Congratulations to the Creative Futures Grant Honorees! 🎉

The Creative Futures Grant awards two $5,000 prizes to Black graduate students in Craft to help bring their creative visions to life. This year’s jury selected Cameron Patricia Downey and Jasmine Narkita Wiley to each receive an award for their projects celebrating Black Diasporic expression. Funded by Maxwell Hanrahan Foundation. 🖤 , drop your congratulations in the comments for our honorees!

▪️ Cameron Patricia Downey ( )
Cameron is an anti-disciplinary artist whose work moves between sculpture, photography, film, body, and curation. Peering into the private lives of objects and finding instruction in the incidental, the precarious, and the misremembered — her practice archives, unfurls, and lends fantasy to the Blues of Black life and relation.

▪️ Jasmine Narkita Wiley ( )
Jasmine is an interdisciplinary artist, writer, and educator with exhibitions at ICA San Francisco, MCA Denver, and Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. Her writing has appeared in Art Journal Open, Surface Design Journal, and Rewind Review Respond. A recipient of the Ted Purves Social Practice Award, a Cadogan Scholarship from the SF Foundation, and a HEAR US Award from NYU Tisch — she holds an MA in Arts Politics from NYU Tisch and is currently pursuing her MFA at California College of the Arts.

We’re thrilled to announce Lydia C. Thompson as the recipient of the BADG Maker Award — recognizing established Black craftspeople committed to their medium, the exploration of Black diasporic culture in contemporary craft and community, and supported by unrestricted funds from the Maxwell Hanrahan Foundation.

“I am deeply honored to receive the BADG Award in recognition of my contributions to the field of crafts. For more than four decades, I have been fortunate to sustain an active studio practice while raising a family and serving in leadership roles at several universities. I am now at a juncture in my career where I can devote more time to creating new work. This award has provided critical support for the purchase of art supplies and new technology applications for upcoming solo exhibitions, shipping expenses, and the completion of field research for the Mumblins installation exhibition.” — Lydia C. Thompson

Lydia is a mixed media artist specializing in ceramics that focus on cultural narratives and educator with over four decades of practice, Lydia’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions including the Mindy Solomon Gallery, Baltimore Clayworks, The Clay Studio, the Crocker Art Museum, the Mint Museum, and the James A. Michener Art Museum, among others.
BADG is proud to celebrate Lydia’s extraordinary career and her enduring contributions to the arts.
