Opera House Arts, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded in 1999 to restore the 1912 Stonington Opera House, on the National Register of Historic Places, to its original role as a performance venue and a community gathering space. Our theater sits on the southwest corner of School and Main Streets in Downtown Stonington, overlooking one of the busiest working waterfronts and the top lobster port in Maine.

We made Big Ink. 🗞️

Last week we shared the The New York Times story online. This Sunday it showed up in print as a full two-page spread, and seeing it on actual newsprint felt different.

This post isn’t really about us, though. It’s about a whole family of Maine opera houses: built more than a century ago, written off more than once, and still the place their towns come together. Swipe through to meet the company we’re keeping:

Camden Opera House opened in 1894 and is still owned and run by the Town of Camden.
Waterville Opera House has been Waterville’s stage since 1902 and shares its building with City Hall.
Johnson Hall Opera House started as a livery stable in Gardiner and is the state’s oldest operating opera house.
Boothbay Opera House is the big yellow Queen Anne that’s anchored Boothbay Harbor since 1894.

Every one of these buildings is still standing because people in town refused to let it go. Volunteers, donors, neighbors, and audiences who keep showing up in February are the real story the Times found, and it’s happening in small towns all over Maine.

So here’s our ask: if you have an opera house near you, go see a show there this winter 🤗

Put yourself in the shoes of anthonybourdain as this film, in the summer of 1975, stars Dominic Sessa as a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain. After lying about winning a Vassar writing fellowship, Tony follows his love interest to Provincetown, Massachusetts. He lands a dishwashing job at The Flagship restaurant under a demanding head chef.

Twice in one year. We still can’t quite believe it!

The The New York Times has written about the Stonington Opera House again. This time we’re part of “Maine’s Opera Houses Are the Light on Main Street,” a look at five historic opera houses keeping their towns lit.

For a 250-seat theater at the end of the road on Deer Isle, this is a very big deal. We’re grateful to writer Elisabeth Vincentelli and photographer Ryan David Brown for making the trip and for telling our story with such care.

And we’re grateful to all of you - our Stonington community for helping to keep our lights on 🤗
