🦗 Who's Eating My Plants? Learn Before You Treat

Holes in leaves? Chewed flowers? Damaged vegetables?
Before reaching for a pesticide, take a closer look. The first step in managing any garden pest is proper identification. Different pests leave different clues, and knowing what's causing the damage helps you choose the most effective—and environmentally responsible—solution.

Some insects, such as aphids, leafhoppers, and stink bugs, feed by piercing plant tissues with straw-like mouthparts and sucking out plant sap. This can cause yellowing, curling leaves, stunted growth, or wilting.

Others, like thrips, scrape and puncture plant surfaces before feeding, often leaving flowers and leaves looking silvery or distorted.

Spider mites, which are not insects but close relatives of spiders, pierce individual plant cells and feed on their contents. Their feeding creates tiny yellow or white speckles, giving leaves a stippled or bronzed appearance.

The good news? Not every damaged leaf requires treatment. Correctly identifying the pest—and understanding the extent of the damage—can help you avoid unnecessary pesticide use and protect beneficial insects that may already be helping control the problem.

🔍 Know your pest before you choose a solution. Good identification is the foundation of successful Integrated Pest Management (IPM). https://extension.umd.edu/resource/ipm-prevent-identify-and-manage-plant-problems/

Get excited, Haverford Township! Haverford Township is excited to launch its first-ever curbside composting program, beginning on July 13, 2026.

The program is free and available to all residents who receive township trash collection services and is designed to divert food scraps and other compostable materials from the waste stream, reducing disposal costs while creating environmental benefits. Compostable food waste will be collected alongside brush and yard waste and transported to a commercial composting facility, where it will be turned into a valuable resource rather than ending up in a landfill.

To help residents get started, the township will host a Curbside Composting Kit Giveaway on SUNDAY, June 14, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Township Building (1014 Darby Road). Residents can pick up a free composting starter kit, learn about acceptable materials, and ask questions about the program. If you cannot attend the giveaway, composting kits will remain available at the Township Building while supplies last during summer business hours. Residents may also participate using their own 5-gallon bucket with a tight-fitting lid, which can be purchased at most home improvement retailers. Paper bag liners are optional but encouraged to help keep containers clean.

Beginning July 13, participants can simply place accepted compostable materials in a 5-gallon bucket at the curb by 6:00 a.m. on Mondays that coincide with scheduled brush collection. The township is also expanding its brush collection program to accept additional yard waste materials, including weeds, grass clippings, and garden trimmings. More details to come!
