Gau-ley, these trails are great 😉🚲

🌳 Accessible from our towns of Marlinton, Richwood, and Cowen, the Gauley Base Backcountry features dozens of miles of wild trails for all skill levels, from the smooth Elk Trail to ripping down Roaring Run!

🥾 Looking for a longer backcountry hike? Take on the neighboring Tea Creek Backcountry, where loops of all sizes are easy thanks to its vast network of trails!

🎨 Amazing work from local artists, students, and educators is coming to a Mon Forest Town near you!

👀 Take a sneak peek over at South Side Studios WV and Visit Grant County, West Virginia Visitors Center in Petersburg, or start planning your Mon Forest Paint & Paddle Tour for this fall.

❤️ A huge thanks to the incredibly talented Kelson Thorne at Art Ju**ie LLC, WVU School of Art and Design, and South Branch Career & Technical Center for their hard work in making these new kiosks possible!

🚧 Heads up, Dolly Sods and Roaring Plains visitors:
Starting June 22, Forest Road 19 is closed for maintenance, from the gate near Laneville to the FR 75 intersection. Vehicles can’t pass through, though foot travel along the road is still allowed.

🙌 The good news: Dolly Sods Wilderness remains open, and you can still get there via Jordan Run Road near Hopeville outside Petersburg. Just plan a different route in if Laneville was your usual approach. There’s no set end date yet, so check the Monongahela National Forest’s current conditions before you go.

🥾 Looking for somewhere new while access is limited? We’ve got 4 Dolly Sods–style hikes adventures across the Monongahela National Forest, from mossy spruce summits to lush river valleys and even beautiful bogs!

1️⃣ Seneca Creek Backcountry - Huckleberry Lumberjack Loop - located along the eastern continental divide, this loop is the closest in vibes and ecosystem to the southern end of the Dolly Sods Wilderness
2️⃣ Otter Creek Wilderness - Otter Creek, Mylius, and Shavers Mountain Loop - this nearby wilderness area offers plenty of stream crossings and mossy boulders that will remind you of muddy adventures on Sundew Trail!
3️⃣ Cranberry Glades & Wilderness Area - Cowpasture and Reserve Loop - the Sod’s sphagnum covered sister to the south provides all the mossy goodness you’ve been missing.
4️⃣ North Fork Mountain Trail - if you’re overlook obsessed, it’s hard to beat this rocky scramble towards one of the most impressive ridgelines in Appalachia!

⚠️ Let us know what other Mon Forest trails you’ll be hitting in the meantime that have some of that Dolly Sods magic! ⬇️🌳

🎣 Angling for a good view? At the edge of Randolph and Webster Counties, the Elk River appears to spontaneously emerge from an underground stream at the sweeping Whitaker Falls!

💦 Whether you're just dipping your toes in the river's shallow ripples or taking the plunge past the falls, Whitaker pairs perfectly with a day of hiking at Kumbrabow State Forest, cruising singletrack in the Monongahela's Gauley Base and Tea Creek Trail Systems, or a scenic drive on the Highland Scenic Highway.

🥾 New community-powered trails are coming to our Town of Franklin with support from our partners at the U.S. Forest Service - Monongahela National Forest and Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative!

🪏 Our Peters Mountain Trail Training event this Wednesday brought together over 30 volunteers and partners to help build a brand-new shared-use trail just 10 minutes from downtown while learning about safe and sustainable trail development.

🌳 Want to get involved in future trail work events and trainings in the Mon? Shoot us a message to find out more!

⚠️ Please note these trails are still under active construction and are not yet open.
