JOIN THE TEAM: During the school year, teens in our Fellowship Program are mentored by women professionals and are paid to write for our magazine, produce videos and podcasts, and develop their photography and storytelling skills.

To celebrate their hard work and commitment, participants who complete at least 80% of program projects earn an educational adventure. This year, our fellows traveled by train to downtown Chicago for a four-day, three-night experience filled with learning, exploration, and fun.

Highlights included visits to the Museum of Broadcast Communications, the University of Illinois Chicago, and Benesch, where they met with women engineers and learned about careers in STEM. They also enjoyed a Chicago River Architecture Boat Tour, a Broadway show, a day at the beach with stunning skyline views, and meals at some of Chicago's favorite restaurants.

These experiences help young women build confidence, explore career opportunities, and create lasting memories while developing their voices as storytellers and leaders.

Applications for the 2026–2027 Fellowship Program open in September. Stay tune

A story about Black women's job losses isn't just a national story. It's a local story.

It's a story about families, neighborhoods, opportunity, and who gets left behind when nobody is paying attention.

In this episode, Annika OMelia from the Rock Island Line joins us for a conversation about why local journalism matters, how storytelling can shape communities, and what it means to speak up for the place you call home.

Maybe the most important stories are the ones told by the people who actually live them.

This piece by Her Voice Media Fellow Kyla Nephew, featured in our Healing Illinois: Race Reimagined issue, is thoughtful, honest, hopeful, and deeply rooted in community pride. It’s about Rock Island’s West End, the weight of perception, and the importance of giving young people space to shape the narrative about where they come from.
