Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range - or more simply VOR - navigation, while slowly being phased out, has played an essential role in helping pilots navigate the airspace above. Specialized radio stations emit a signal from at every degree, allowing pilots to tune in and track the course to or from the station.
Pilots in training will often learn how to utilize VOR stations in practicing lost procedures, dialing into two separate stations, identifying the radial they are on, with the point at which they intersect on a sectional chart being the likely, current location of the aircraft.
