Day 13: Invite them to something that isn't church.

A morning on the lake, a round of golf, a ballgame. Then make one rule: no church talk. Your pastor spends most conversations being the pastor. Give them a few hours to just be a friend.

Day 12: Protect their day off.

Pastors and church staff are on call around the clock. Make sure they have at least one day a week out of the office where they can actually rest, and then honor it. Unless it's an emergency, the question can wait until tomorrow.

Day 11: Offer your time.

Make a coupon for free childcare, housecleaning, yard work, or a car wash. The chores that pile up at home are often the ones a ministry family has the least time for. An hour of your help can give them an evening back.

Day 10: Remember birthdays and anniversaries.

Church staff show up for everyone else's milestones: weddings, graduations, funerals. Their own dates often pass quietly. A card, a text, or a cake on the right day tells them they're known, not only needed.

Day 9: Give a gift card for groceries or a night out.

It's a small, practical kindness. It takes a week of dinner stress off a staff family, or gives a couple an evening at a table they didn't have to set. Add a note that says it's for them, not for a church event.

Day 8: Write a note by hand.

Some pastors keep every card they've been given and pull them out again on the hard weeks. Tell them one specific thing they did that mattered to you: a sermon, a hospital visit, a conversation. It may get read for years.

Day 7: Be part of the solution.

Every church has a culture, and every member helps set it. When you respond with patience, speak up for reasonable boundaries, and refuse to feed a complaint, you make it easier for your staff to do their work without carrying needless stress.

Day 6: Let staff spouses and children be themselves.

Nobody hired the pastor's wife. Nobody hired the youth pastor's kids. Yet many of them feel watched every Sunday. Give them the same room to be ordinary that you'd want for your own family.

Day 5: Understand the expectations your church places on its staff, and check your own.

Preach, counsel, lead, administrate, answer the phone at 11pm, never look tired. Nobody could meet every expectation a congregation holds. Ask yourself which of yours are fair, and which you could let go.

Day 4: Be open to new ideas.

"We've never done it that way before" can shut down a staff member faster than any criticism. When your pastor or staff bring something new, start with curiosity. Ask what they're hoping for before you ask what it costs.
