Vision and mission are often used interchangeably, but they serve two very different but equally important purposes. Your vision paints a picture of the future you’re working to create, while your mission defines your organization’s unique role in making that future possible.

When the two work together, they can sharpen decision-making, strengthen your story and help everyone — from staff and board members to donors and partners — understand not just what you do, but why it matters.

Is it time to revisit yours? Our recent blog breaks down the difference and shares practical tips for creating vision and mission statements that are clear, compelling and memorable.

Not a book person? Most people are not, so I intentionally wrote this book differently.

The Nonprofit Flywheel is a Playbook – with pictures, stories, definitions, reflection questions and practical tools to help you put ideas to work.

And, you don’t have to start on page one. Find the challenge you’re facing and turn to that chapter.

Study a graphic. Try a tool. Bring an important question to your team.

I want this to be something you reach for when you need help, whether you read every page or keep returning to a few favorites.

Take a look: the digital edition is free: https://www.meetsuzanne.com/nonprofitflywheel

This week’s blog shares why I wrote it this way: https://socialimpactarchitects.com/nonprofit-flywheel-announcement/

We cannot keep asking exhausted nonprofit leaders for even more heroics.

Nonprofit burnout is personal for me. I’ve experienced it, and I’ve seen talented, committed people struggle when their organizations don’t have the systems, resources or support they need.

That’s part of why I wrote The Nonprofit Flywheel. Great missions deserve great organizations — and so do the people behind them.

Thank you, John Gillespie and Kim Guarino, for making space for this conversation on On a Mission for Nonprofit Leaders, and to Tressa Versteeg for helping bring it to listeners.

If you’re holding the tension between mission-driven urgency and sustainable leadership, this conversation is for you. Share it with a colleague or board member, too.

Nonprofits are hard to run. You’re balancing community needs, funding, people, programs and board expectations. Often, several need your attention at the same time.

If you want running your nonprofit to feel less difficult, I wrote The Nonprofit Flywheel to help. I have seen it work in dozens of nonprofits.

It gives you practical ways to see what needs attention, set priorities and build systems that make the work easier to sustain. Because working harder cannot be our only strategy.

What’s harder than it needs to be at your organization? Start with the driver and read a few pages. Choose one thing to focus on this week.

Download the free Playbook: https://www.meetsuzanne.com/nonprofitflywheel & get started.

Before your coffee gets cold this Monday, pick one thing you’d like to change at your nonprofit this week. ☕

Maybe a process that wastes time. A fundraising approach that needs attention. Or a team conversation you’ve been putting off.

Download The Nonprofit Flywheel and read the chapter that speaks to that challenge. Then choose one idea to try this week.

You don’t have to tackle everything – start with something that would make a difference.

How resilient is your nonprofit - really?

When pressure hits, do your systems absorb the stress, or does it fall on a few people to carry even more?

Our resilience assessment explores 10 questions around decision-making, risk, leadership, burnout, accountability, adaptability and more. It’s a simple way to identify where your organization is strong and where intentional design may be needed.

Take the assessment and explore four ways to build organizational resilience in our blog: https://socialimpactarchitects.com/resilient-nonprofits/

When nonprofits cut costs, how do we know whether we’re cutting fat — or muscle?

It’s a distinction that matters. An unused subscription is one thing. The staff development, technology or systems your team needs to do its work well are another.

I returned to Gary Marra’s Your Customer, Your Success podcast to discuss my NEW book The Nonprofit Flywheel. Gary, of Schooley Mitchell, asked insightful questions about how nonprofits can use resources wisely while investing in their ability to deliver on the mission.

This clip gets into that balance. Before your next budget conversation, consider: Are we eliminating waste, or weakening our ability to do the work?

Watch below, then take the full conversation along on a weekend walk or coffee break.

🎧 Listen to the full episode: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-nonprofit-flywheel-how-strong-organizations/id1783768227?i=1000792338757

Then, consider your budget – are you unintentionally holding back your organization by not building muscle?

What if nonprofit resilience isn’t about working harder but about designing organizations that can bend without breaking? In our post, we explore what resilient nonprofits have in common: clear priorities, distributed responsibility, adaptable leadership, strong relationships and systems designed to withstand pressure.

The goal isn’t to become unbreakable. It’s to become adaptable and keep moving the mission forward together.

We often call teens “the next generation of leaders, but Ella and Jacob are already changemakers at an early age.
These two San Antonio teens started a food pantry at their school with help from our amazing client, Students of Service - SOS

TEEN KIDS NEWS featured their story, and I was glad to join the segment to discuss why projects like this matter for teens.

When young people tackle a real community need, they practice leadership and emotional intelligence: listening, understanding others’ experiences, solving problems and turning an idea into action.

NEW research from The Allstate Foundation and Gallup reinforces this connection: 79% of young people surveyed said service positively affected their connection to their community. The research also links youth-led service with greater confidence and career readiness.

The pantry helps fellow students, but building it also helps Ella and Jacob discover what they’re capable of.

Based in San Antonio, Students of Service helps young people develop a global perspective and solve local problems through its Learn, Serve and Explore pillars.

Congratulations, Ella and Jacob! Thank you to Students of Service for supporting young changemakers and Teen Kids News for sharing their story.
