FYI

The Big Creek Greenway trailhead at Fowler Park will be temporarily closed Tuesday, Sept. 22, for pre-construction testing ahead of an upcoming renovation project.

Greenway users can still hit the trail that day by accessing the Greenway from the Bethelview or Union Hill trailheads.

The testing is an early step in preparation for renovations planned at the Fowler Park Trailhead, with construction expected to begin in late October or early November.

The highest point in Forsyth County has been a gathering place for thousands of years, long before it was a county at all.

Sawnee Mountain takes its name from a Cherokee man who helped early white settlers learn to farm and build in the area. At its summit sits a natural rock formation called the Indian Seats, where archaeological evidence suggests Native Americans gathered for ceremonial purposes as far back as 500 BCE. The land was later scarred by the Georgia Gold Rush, riddled with mining pits, before a local family donated hundreds of acres in the 1990s to protect it for good. The preserve finally opened to the public in 2005.

Hike the trail to the top and you're standing where people have stood for millennia, not just for the view.

Tuesday, the FC Parks Foundation was honored to be the recipient of a $5,000 grant from the !
Those funds combined with a grant from Campbell Group and proceeds from our events will help us donate a Inflatable Planetarium Projection System for Sawnee Mountain Preserve - FC Parks & Recreation this summer.

Kids of all ages will be able to explore planet Earth, the moon, stars and galaxy with fun, scientific views!
