Tourism with a Local Heart
BPW SXM was pleased to host an inspiring discussion on Tourism with a Local Heart, chaired by Suzanne Scantlebery and featuring Guest Speaker Stephie Gumbs.
Together, they explored the future of tourism through four key pillars: Sustainable Tourism, Authentic Tourism, Population Input, and Education—all essential to creating a tourism industry that benefits both residents and visitors.
A central theme of the evening was the importance of balancing the 3 P’s: People, Planet, and Profit, ensuring that economic growth goes hand in hand with environmental stewardship and community well-being.
They also discussed the growing need to move beyond sustainability and embrace Regenerative Tourism—an approach that not only minimizes negative impacts but actively strengthens our communities, culture, and ecosystems for future generations.
Sustainable tourism is no longer a choice; it is a necessity. By working together, we can preserve what makes our island special while creating meaningful experiences that enrich visitors and empower residents.
Thanks to everyone who joined the conversation and contributed their perspectives. Together, we can build a tourism industry with a truly local heart.
