As we move forward with designing the Brooklyn Skate Garden we want to give a HUGE shout out to the many skate organizations that have collaborated with us over the years.

This one goes out to the who helped us in the early days when the concept of our mission was first formed and imagined.

Back in 2019, the NYCSC pioneered organized skatepark cleanups with the NYC Parks Dept. They helped establish “broom boxes”. These were NYC parks “metal boxes” which had all the materials needed to help skaters cleanup and take ownership of our skate parks. The NYC Skate Coalition under its founder Ian Clark has been a key skate organization in NYC for over a decade uniting skaters to come together with outstanding positive events.

They continue to host amazing events throughout the year. NYCSC has also been influential in the saving the old Riverside and rebuild of the new Andy Kessler Skate Park on the UWS along with getting rid of the NYC Parks Department 3 foot rule, and continues to be a force in hosting pool events at Andy Kessler, Pier 62 and at Owls Head Skate Parks.

When we 1st met Ian he invited the Brooklyn Skate Garden to join them for our 1st skatepark cleanup at Golconda. This also included a gardening event followed by a skate clinic. It was an enthusiastic event where skaters felt connected, united and enjoyed taking ownership of our shared skate spaces by lending a hand to help clean our skateparks (see photos)

We surely got our vision planned hosting these types of events which became the start of the BSG positive skatepark engagement. Our events ultimately blossomed into art and culture events and many more gardening and skatepark clean ups. The Brooklyn Skate Garden wouldn’t have blossomed without the support of the NYC skate community which has been so supportive throughout all of these years since our inception.

A HUGE Thank you goes out to the and for being such a key collaborator with us.

This past week the was featured in a local online newspaper in NYC.

We have been very excited about our project inspired by Pablo Ramirez and from his foundation in his honor being officially supported by the Mayor's office, the Brooklyn Borough President, the NYC Parks Dept and all our local city elected officials including for helping us make our dream a reality.

The Brooklyn Skate Garden is an opportunity to finally give skateboarders and our community the equitable spaces we need. Its not okay for skaters and young children to be pushed into dangerous locations outside our cities like under highways and or bridges to skate.

Finally our project will be at a green beautiful park, Mount Prospect Park in central Brooklyn.

Our mission is to make a SkateGarden which fosters community building, sustainability and a place where all our NYC residents can enjoy our parks together. The BSG will be a place of greenism and a beautifully landscaped space that is not just for skaters. Everyone.

However there has been a problem, a few of the Nymbys who live across the street want Mount Prospect Park all for themselves. Our public parks however are not privately owned parks, rather our public parks are for all of us NYC residents. The Brooklyn Skate Garden is is now in the design phase. Please stay tuned here for all the next steps regarding attending upcoming community board meetings and future events we will be having.

Today and every day is Earth Day. 🌎

Let's all give back and continue to respect the earth. By doing that you're also respecting yourself and our future generations.

Help to;
1. Reuse, ♻️recycle your board, turn it into ART when you're done riding it.
2. BYOB; bring your own bottle; carry your water, don't use plastic bottles.
3. Pack in and pack out, help to keep our skate parks clean by not litering and advocating this to friends.

We can all set a great example not only for today but for future generations and beyond.

The Brooklyn Skate Garden is for skateboarding and so much more- planting, gardening, and taking care of our parks🌿🪴🛹

Come Join the Brooklyn Skate Garden
Community Engagement Meeting

When: Monday, March 25, 5:30 -7:30 pm
Where: St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf 260 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn NY 11225

This meeting is to vocalize how much Brooklyn needs a safe place that can host multiple recreational activities, spaces for education and culture, while promoting sustainability.

BSG Background Story
Pre-Pandemic days back in 2019, a change.org petition circulated to have an environmentally focused skate park built in the area of Central Brooklyn. (Btw You can sign the petition, Link in bio.) From the catalyst of the life and legacy of Pablo Ramirez the idea of a Brooklyn Skate Garden was born with 1000’s of skaters
sharing our vision. Skateboarding + Green spaces =  safe places for skaters and community members to connect and thrive.

We hosted dozens of skate meet ups, gardening and art and culture events and  BSG succeeded in the participatory budgeting process and was determined to be a community need by The NYC Parks Dept.

Fast forward in Jan 2024 BSG was officially funded by the mayor’s office, our Brooklyn borough president, Antonio Reynoso, our city council members Shahana Hanif and Crystal Hudson, who together have 100% pledged to build the BSG at Mount Prospect Park.

BSG would enhance Mount Prospect Park into a safe space for kids and teens in the neighborhood to connect with nature as well as the greater Brooklyn and NYC skate community.

Support Our Future Skaters

There has been some opposition when neighbors learned that there would be a skateGARDEN at Mount Prospect Park   and didn’t understand the full intent of the project, and that BSG would take up just 1 of Mount Prospect Park’s 8 acres.

This project is so much more than a slab of concrete. We believe that to meet the needs of ALL New Yorkers, our parks should be open to everyone.

Please join us to share your support for the Brooklyn Skate Garden and let your voices be heard.

Please RSVP in our Bio.

Support building the Brooklyn Skate Garden at Mount Prospect by continue to sign our petition on Change.org (link in bio)

This petition was started originally in 2019 by a skate advocate and a group of young teenagers who wanted to see a skatepark in central Brooklyn inspired on behalf of the legacy of Pablo Ramirez who grew up in Brooklyn as a skater, jazz drummer and artist. The was formed in his honor as grassroots organization that serves and provides young people with free scholarships to do what they love in the areas of skateboarding, music and art, all passions of Pablo.

The is a key project of PRF and we have grown exponentially by advocating for creating an innovative new model for how skateparks can bring communities together. BSG is for skateboarding + gardens + art and culture and so much more.

Our ethos is a green eco sustainable SkateGARDEN that can host skateboarding, plenty of areas for seating, picnicking, gardens, spaces for outdoor learning, and areas for art and culture. A shared public park and space that’s for the entire community spanning all of our NYC cultures, identities and all of us coming together. Most importantly its a safe refuge for skaters in a green space.

Sign our petition ( link in bio) to add why you love this idea and what you love about skateboarding.

Mission

The Pablo Ramirez Foundation is a key driving force in creating a new kind of skate park “garden.” The Brooklyn Skate Garden is currently in the early stages of development — but our vision is that it will be an innovative model for how skateparks can bring communities together.

The BSG will be an all inclusive environment for skaters of all ages and skill levels, from kids to pros. We believe in the ethos of sustainability, recycling, gardening, art and music as key functions of the design of the skate garden. The BSG will pave the way for future skateparks to be created and modeled all over the world inspired by Pablo’s love and passion for living life.
