"We believe all people are created equal, that this is America's fundamental ideal." This is the first tenet of the Democratic Creed.

in 1866, the Civil Rights Act of 1866 became law, declaring that all persons born in the United States are citizens and entitled to equal rights under the law.

Passed in the aftermath of the Civil War, the act was designed to counter Black Codes and protect the rights of newly freed Black Americans. It marked the first time the federal government defined citizenship and affirmed equal protection in law.

The promise of equality has been challenged from the start. The work to make it real continues.
