WAPOA Volunteer Workers, DNR officials & divers, and members of the local press met yesterday ( Oct. 9, 2025) to check the Rush Lake site where the aggressive Aquatic Invasive Species Starry Stonewort was found last fall — and which has since been under intensive treatment by the lake association WAPOA.
The good news was that little if any live regrowth was found, just sludge as seen. In the close up you can see one of the tiny stars known as bulbils. These photos will be explained in detail later in the comments. If you can contribute to these efforts, please go to www.wapoa.org and donate. 9-10am: Tune in to your local MPR station or stream at mpr.org. Kirsti Marohn will host University of Minnesota experts Jeff Marr and Andy Riesgraf to discuss the newly released Phase 2 wakes report.

10-11am: Join the MN COLA membership meeting on Zoom. The discussion on wakes will continue with context from Chuck Becker and a presentation from Scott Rolfs of Wisconsin’s Lakes at Stake organization on building broad coalitions to protect our lakes.

Both sessions are free and open to all. Registration is required for the 10am Zoom meeting. After registering, you’ll receive the Zoom link in an email from Zoom—be sure to save it!

WCYC sponsors youth boating safety classes presented by the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Water Patrol. They teach the basics of safe boat operation and the students complete the state exam themselves. Each session is followed by lunch (pizza of course at Zorbaz!) and allows for on-the-water training supervised by the instructors. Yesterday’s class was a great success! Learn more: www.wcyc.info
