Meet our survey team!

We are so grateful to have Jonah and Porter working as field survey technicians this summer.

From May-June, surveys are taking place in Le Sueur and Itasca Counties to assess the outcomes of a previous translocation study, which aimed to pilot reintroducing loons into their historic breeding grounds in southern MN. This work is supported by a 2026 NLC-Ricketts Conservation Foundation Common Loon Research Grant and a 2026 Savaloja Grant from the Minnesota Ornithologists Union. This project is providing opportunities to two early-career scientists, so let’s learn a little bit about them!

🐟My name is Jonah, and I am a recent college graduate with a lifelong love for wildlife and wild places. Some of my most treasured childhood memories include hearing the loons calling across the still waters at night during family trips up North. I’ve been an avid birder for about eight years now, and I enjoy looking for birds anywhere and everywhere from urban parks and ponds to remote woods and bogs. I gained experience with formal bird surveys at the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point, and now having graduated with a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Management, I am proud to be working as a field survey technician for the National Loon Center this summer. I’m kayaking lakes in Itasca County looking for loons that were banded as part of a previous study and having lots of fun along the way!

🐟Hi, my name is Porter Simonette, and I am a sophomore student at Winona State University. I have always been very passionate about plants and animals, specifically water birds. I have worked with many species of ducks, geese, and swans, but I have been interested in working with loons for a long time. I love being able to get out on the water and observe all the nature around me. I am honored to be able to work with the National Loon Center and conduct surveys on something I find so interesting!

Our team just got a little loonier!

We’re excited to welcome summer interns Blake Evers and Cedrik Von Briel to the NLC team. You may see them in the Nest, guiding pontoon tours on the Whitefish Chain or at outreach events throughout the state!

🐟Blake is a student at the University of Minnesota—Twin Cities studying Biology, Human Physiology, and Spanish & Portuguese Studies. He is originally from the Twin Cities area, but growing up, he spent his summers in Crosslake. From a young age, he has been interested in the outdoors, with some of his hobbies including fishing, hiking, and paddleboarding. He credits his experiences with nature in the Crosslake area for sparking his interest in biology and inspiring him to pursue a scientific career. As a research intern, Blake will primarily be working to survey and monitor the loons and lakes of the Brainerd Lakes Area, as well as assisting with community outreach events. He is excited to be a new member of the National Loon Center team and to have the opportunity to learn more about our majestic state bird!

🐟Cedrik is a California boy who is first and foremost a bird guy and loves watching the wintering loons of his local Pacific coast harbors. He started his love for birds and bird science in high school, and has not looked back since. Cedrik is in his fourth year studying Wildlife Management and Communications at Cal Poly Humboldt in Arcata, California where he is a board member and trip leader for the local Godwit Days bird festival. He has also been a two-time camp counselor, a Snowy Plover nest surveyor, and an expert in the art of bird-feeding. This is his first year with the National Loon Center, and he is excited to spend the summer spitting loon facts and entertaining the masses with great loon views and the occasional loon pun.

Cedrik mostly spends his free time out in the field looking for birds, but also loves kayaking, photographing local wildlife, playing baseball, keeping up with Bay Area sports, and exploring the world.

Preparations for the geothermal system are now complete, and fifty wells will be drilled over the next few weeks. Using the earth’s constant underground temperature, all of these wells will work to heat and cool our building depending on the season, enabling the National Loon Center to operate as a near net-zero energy facility.

As we’re just a year from opening this facility, each week now brings visible progress to our future home, and we look forward to sharing updates with you!

A few weeks ago, we were excited to announce the return of the loons. But today we have the announcement many of you have truly been waiting for: the return of the Loon Pontoon! We have a full summer of sailing on deck, so what are you waiting for? Follow the link in our bio to find registration to secure your opportunity to enjoy the loons of the Whitefish Chain!

Our Loon Pontoon, The StewardShip, takes passengers on guided tours of Cross Lake to watch, learn about, and float among the loons for an educational up-north experience. A naturalist is on board to answer all of your loon-related questions and share lessons for all ages about a loon’s behavior, habitat, and conservation needs. The Loon Pontoon offers programs catered to more specific groups, too, including research tours, conservation workshops, and a Junior Loon Biologist Program for kids.

Oh, and did we mention that these trips are free? For anyone that’s never seen a loon before, you have no excuse anymore! Reserve your spot on the Loon Pontoon this summer. We’ll see you out on the water!
