Today, June 14, we proudly celebrate two important milestones in our nation's history.

Flag Day commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States on June 14, 1777, by the Continental Congress. Our flag remains a powerful symbol of freedom, unity, and the sacrifices made by generations of Americans.

Today is also the 251st Birthday of the United States Army. Established on June 14, 1775, by the Continental Congress, the Army predates the Declaration of Independence and has faithfully defended our nation for more than two and a half centuries.

As members of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 39, we honor the brave soldiers who have served and continue to serve, and we proudly display the flag that represents the ideals they have sworn to protect.

40 years ago in his Memorial Day address, Ronald Reagan said, “…they gave up two lives—the one they were living and the one they would have lived.”

This Memorial Day, we pause to remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. Their courage and devotion will never be forgotten.

In Oldham County, Kentucky, generations of service members have answered the call to defend our country. From the battlefields of the Civil War to the conflicts of the modern era, these soldiers left behind families, dreams, and futures so that others could live in peace. Their names are etched not only in stone, but in the heart of our community. Each one represents a story of bravery, commitment, and love of country.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 39 invites you to join us in honoring these heroes at the Memorial Day Program at the John Black Community Center in Buckner at 10am. Together, we will reflect, remember, and pay tribute to those who gave everything.

In celebration of National Poppy Day and Memorial Day Weekend, go check out the Poppy Festival in Paris, Kentucky!

​Everyone is welcome to take photos in the flowers during our regular event hours. There is no additional fee beyond regular admission.

Each year, we take time to honor a simple but powerful symbol of sacrifice—the red poppy.

National Poppy Day is observed on the Friday before Memorial Day, a tradition inspired by the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. The poppy came to represent the lives lost in war after it was seen growing among the battle-scarred fields of Europe following World War I. Its bright red color serves as a lasting reminder of the blood shed by those who fought for our freedom.

The American Legion Auxiliary proudly continues this tradition by distributing poppies in exchange for donations that support veterans, active-duty service members, and their families. Each poppy you wear is more than a flower, it’s a tribute to the fallen and a promise that their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
