Last Friday, Angela Anderson and Eileen Meyer from Tri-County Community Action visited to share details about the programs and services they offer in our community. Founded in 1974 in Oldham County as a Community for Aging, the organization expanded to Henry and Trimble Counties in 1985, with a mission centered on improving lives to strengthen communities. Today, they provide 24 programs for older adults, including transportation for essential needs like medical appointments and non-essential outings such as hair appointments or shopping, the LIHEAP to help with electric bills—currently assisting 180–200 families—and court-ordered substance use recovery services. Senior centers are available in three counties for residents aged 60 and older, offering daily activities, guest speakers, free lunches, and opportunities for physical activity to promote social connection and community. In Oldham County, they also run an adult day program for those needing more medical care, along with delivering Meals on Wheels prepared by Masterson’s.

Last Friday, we were honored to hear from Tonya Schweitzer and Terri Massey of Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana and present the organization with a grant. These grants support scholarships for scouts who might otherwise be unable to attend summer camp, helping them build confidence, courage, character, leadership, and essential life skills in a safe and supportive environment.

Last Friday, we had the chance to hear from Teena Halbig of the Rotary Club of Louisville Suburban, who spoke about Generosity Global’s Clean Water project in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This Global Grant project, led by Teena and her club, aims to bring clean water to local communities. They collaborate with Water Step, along with churches, schools, and refugee camps in the region. The first water station was installed in 2020 to provide safe drinking water and improve sanitation, helping to prevent disease. There are currently 17 water stations, with plans to increase that number to 23 in the near future.

The South Oldham Rotary Club is proud to continue its long-standing support of local education through scholarships provided in partnership with Oldham County Community Scholarships.

This year, the Club awarded six $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from South Oldham High School during the Oldham County Community Scholarships awards ceremony held May 18th at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center..

Congratulations to scholarship recipients Makenna Bowen, Alexandria Churchill, Luke Hayden, Kara Loechle, Emily Robinette, and Brady Rutledge! Best wishes to you as you begin your new journey.

South Oldham Rotarians Joe Dardano, Nick Stephens, and Steve Roling were honored to present the scholarships and celebrate these outstanding students and their accomplishments.

Scholarships and many of the South Oldham Rotary Club’s community projects are made possible through support of the South Oldham Rotary Bourbon & Wine Experience — returning October 2nd at the beautiful Yew Dell Botanical Gardens.

On Monday, a group of Rotarians and high school Interact students participated in a rock-painting activity with Pillar residents. Approximately 20 residents attended the event, showcasing their artistic talents. Appreciation is extended to Rotarians Cindy Hack, Morgan Schweitzer, and Rachel Thompson for their contributions. Special thanks are also due to Dona Davis of Pillar for facilitating these visits and to Crane Hardscaping on Old LaGrange Road for donating the rocks.
