Altrusa International of Copperas Cove

We make our community better through leadership, partnership and service. We make our communities better through leadership, partnership and service.

That is our goal. Founded in 1917, Altrusa is relevant to many civic-minded people who are interested in creating better communities. Last year, Altrusans proudly gave over a million volunteer hours around the world, including clubs in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, England, Bermuda, Ireland, India, Scotland, New Zealand and Russia. Several decades ago, Altrusa decided to institute litera

cy as an area of focus for the organization; since then, service areas have expanded to include HIV/AIDS and disaster relief. During our last biennium, Altrusans assisted in relief efforts for the Port-au-Prince, Haiti and Christchurch, New Zealand earthquakes, as well as the Tsunami in Japan. Most importantly, Altrusans give their time and resources in areas that are deemed most important in their local communities. The Altrusa story is evolving every day through club accomplishments. When you visit any Altrusa club, you will see leadership and service in action.

FOCUS ON: COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Operation Stand Down* on May 23, 2026, was a success! Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. represented by members (pictured) Juline Smith, Angea Carroll, Doris Gallegos and BJ Taylor participated in Operation Stand Down Central Texas in Killeen.

* "Operation Stand Down in the Fort Hood area generally refers to the localized community outreach events hosted by Operation Stand Down Central Texas (OSDCT) to assist homeless and at-risk veterans. These events provide critical services such as housing assistance, medical care, hot meals, and clothing.” -Killeen Daily Herald

FOCUS ON LITERACY:

Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. is proud to share that during the 2025-2026 school year, a total of 1993 books were distributed to kindergarten, first, second and third grade students at six elementary schools in Copperas Cove ISD. In addition, dedicated Altrusa volunteers in collaboration with the CCISD school librarians and staff donated their time to help students select the perfect book for their very own.

FOCUS ON LITERACY:

On May 12, 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. represented by members, Teri Ankarberg (pictured left) and Hope Wunsch (pictured right) continued its mission to promote literacy by reading to 24 children at Cove Park Head Start.

FOCUS ON LITERACY:

On May 8, 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. represented by members Monika Robinette and Doris Gallegos delivered 276 books to first, second and third graders at Fairview-Miss Jewell Elementary School. Christine Ragland, Fairview-Miss Jewell librarian is pictured at left.

FOCUS ON LITERACY:

On May 5, 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. represented by Altrusan Deborah Vaughn read to the children of Cove North Headstart including 16-three & four and year olds, eight babies and eight toddlers. Bracelets were handed out to the three and four year-olds.

FOCUS ON ALTRUSA BIRTHDAY:

On April 28, 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. celebrated its 35th birthday and Add An Altrusan Day! Participants (26 folks total: 18 members & 8 guests) dressed up in festive travel attire and enjoyed lunch, a delicious dessert and fun-filled activities.

FOCUS ON CHILDREN LITERACY:

On April 24. 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. were honored to distribute 261 books to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders at Williams/Ledger Elementary. Those Altrusans honored to help today were Sheila Wright, Hope Wunsch, Doris Gallegos, Robin Spencer and Teri Ankarburg, Hope Wunsch and Melanie Harrell.

FOCUS ON CHILDREN’S LITERACY:

On April 20, 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. continued its book distribution at Hettie Halstead Elementary, Copperas Cove ISD (CCISD) distributing a total of 265 books to 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students. FOCUS ON FIRST REPONDERS:
(IT’S TACO TUESDAY!)

On April 21, 2026, members of Altrusa International of Copperas Cove, TX, Inc. represented by Debbie Vaughn, Donna Soule, Mary Derrick, Carol Hall, Hope Wunche, Sylvia Miller, Teresa Ingram, Linda Kaplan, Mary Ann Davis, BJ Taylor and Debbie Llacuna provided an appreciation lunch (tacos of course!) for approximately twenty Copperas Cove fire fighters.

On April 17, 2026, Altrusa International of Copperas Cove , TX, Inc. represented by Donna Soule and Debbie Llacuna (pictured) departed Copperas Cove to attend the 70th District Nine Annual Conference in Amarillo with the theme: Discover Your Altrusa Journey.
