NWCG Requesting Feedback on Rx Fire Terms for the Fire Glossary

Here is an opportunity for our Rx Fire community to provide input on the definitions of these terms. The proposed definitions are outlined below and listed in a document linked in the "Terms for Review" box. Send this out to your Councils and PBAs, and other Rx Fire practitioners.

TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT
Subject: S-131 Firefighter Type 1
Date: December 9 - 10, 2026
Location: Online/Virtual

Tall Timbers, a Research Station, founded in 1958, is a leader in fire science and prescribed fire training. Its research has shaped modern fire management, and it continues to advance regional and national programs with innovative curricula and collaborative approaches to fire management.

S-131, Firefighter Type 1, is a 100% virtual instructor-led training (VILT) course designed for experienced wildland and prescribed firefighters currently qualified as Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2) who are seeking qualification as Firefighter Type 1 (FFT1) and/or Incident Commander Type 5 (ICT5) under the NWCG Wildland Fire Qualification System Guide (PMS 310-1). This performance-based course uses realistic, scenario-driven exercises to develop and apply situational assessment, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills in dynamic wildland fire situations.

OBJECTIVES
* Demonstrate decision making across changing situations
* Manage an Initial Attack (IA), including completing a size-up and determine appropriate actions
* Provide a briefing to assigned personnel
* Establish effective communication and coordination with aerial resources
* Demonstrate the responsibilities of an FFT1/ICT5 during a medical emergency
* Determine the appropriate structure protection using the structure triage outlined in the NWCG Incident Response Pocket Guide (IRPG), PMS 461

COURSE CONTENT
Virtual Instructor-Led Training: Two required 1⁄2 day Zoom sessions (December 9 and 10 from 0800 –1300 PT). Followed by a final exam with a 2-hour time limit (due by December 10, 2359 PT).

COST
$200 due upon acceptance into the course. Instructions will be provided regarding payment.

A Historic Day for Prescribed Fire in Michigan

On September 14, something truly historic happened in the northern Lower Peninsula — the first prescribed burn on State Park land in living institutional memory. Even more meaningful, this burn brought TREX participants and the full MDNR crew together, working side‑by‑side throughout the day.

This collaboration gave everyone involved an experience they valued deeply. Both groups had the opportunity to see what the other is capable of, share knowledge, learn new techniques, and build trust in a real‑world fire environment.

The burn also treated some exceptionally high‑quality, fire‑adapted habitat, helping maintain the health and resilience of this important ecosystem.

A huge celebration is in order for MDNR’s willingness to open doors, welcome partners, and work collaboratively with agencies and NGOs through the powerful framework that TREX provides. This is the kind of partnership that strengthens Michigan’s fire community and supports the landscapes we all care about.

Here’s to continued collaboration, shared learning, and many more successful burns ahead!
