October belongs to Marigolds. The official flower of Dia de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead) loves the relief from heat that fall brings. They will brighten a fall garden for several months until the first freeze (typically December).

Rain lilies are a fun addition in the garden. Their blooms appear after a soaking rain shower; some varieties are repeat bloomers while other varieties bloom mainly in the fall. Bulbs can be planted in fall or spring and they will readily multiply and spread.

This is the time of year when we get "surprised" by the appearance of spider lilies, also known as hurricane lilies. They remain dormant during the heat of summer but a heavy rain in the fall brings them to life. They are great late season color; they bloom on stems with no leaves then green foliage will emerge after the flowers fade and stay green all winter before dying back in the spring.
