💛 Honoring Our History: The Gold Star Pilgrimages Become Law

Last Sunday, we shared the story of the early Gold Star pilgrimages and the mothers who longed to visit their sons' final resting places overseas.

But their journey was far from over.

For more than a decade following World War I, Gold Star Mothers fought for the opportunity to visit their children's graves in Europe at government expense.

Their testimony before Congress was heartbreaking and powerful.

Jennie Walsh of New York, who lost her only child in France when he was just 18 years old, challenged lawmakers to recognize the grief of these mothers and their desire to stand beside their sons' graves.

Their voices were finally heard.

🇺🇸 On March 2, 1929, President Calvin Coolidge signed legislation authorizing more than $5.8 million for the Gold Star Pilgrimage of Mothers and Widows.

Between 1930 and 1933, eligible mothers and widows would have the opportunity to travel overseas at government expense to visit the final resting places of their loved ones.

Not every mother chose to go. Some believed the funds should instead help wounded veterans. Their compassion reminds us that even in their own grief, these mothers continued to think of others.

As we approach our Centennial in 2028, we honor these courageous women whose determination helped turn heartbreak into action and whose legacy of love, remembrance, and service continues through American Gold Star Mothers today.

Happy 127th birthday to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW)!

On this VFW Day we recognize tireless volunteerism and hard work of these veterans, who are Still Serving as they Honor the Dead by Helping the Living; we know No One Does More for Veterans. We also remember those VFW members who are no longer with us, for their sacrifices, dedication and good deeds have far outlived them.

Many Auxiliary members joined under the eligibility of VFW members and view their veterans as their inspiration and “reason why,” in addition to being family.

On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, we honor the brave service members who were prisoners of war and remember those who remain missing in action.

Behind every name is a hero, a family, and a story that deserves to be remembered. We are forever grateful for the courage and sacrifice of those who served and for the families who have carried their hope and strength through generations.

Until they are all home, we remember. 🇺🇸
